The Night Market on 4th Avenue was a chaotic sensory overload. Neon lights flickered through the lingering haze of street-food smoke, heavy bass echoed from nearby alleyways, and crowds jostled shoulder-to-shoulder under string lights.
It was a total departure from Elliot’s usual polished haunts, but that was the point. He had calculated that bringing Lilly into a raw, unpredictable environment would force her out of her shell faster—and make his presence feel like her only anchor.
"A bit different from a bookstore, isn't it?" Elliot asked, leaning down near her ear as they reached a quieter stretch near an old brick alleyway.
"It's incredible," Lilly said softly, her eyes wide as she took in the surroundings. She instinctively grabbed the edge of his sleeve. "I don't usually do crowds like this, but... it's exciting."
Elliot felt a quiet spark of triumph. She’s already clinging to me. He reached down and closed his warm fingers around her hand. "Stick with me. You’re completely safe."
Before he could continue his charm offensive, the atmosphere shifted violently.
“Watch where you’re going, man!”
A violent shove sent a nearby street vendor crashing into a rack of metal signs. Two men stepped out from the deep shadows of the alley—heavily tattooed, twitchy, and looking for a fight. One slammed an iron tire iron against the brick wall with a sickening CRACK.
"Hand over the cash drawer! Right now!" the guy yelled, pulling a heavy utility knife from his jacket.
The crowd scattered screaming. Panic flooded the courtyard.
Elliot didn't flinch. To him, this was a goldmine—the ultimate shortcut to making Lilly view him as an invincible protector. He stepped smoothly in front of her, his hands raised in a calm, authoritative gesture.
"Hey! Back off!" Elliot called out, his voice deep with calculated confidence. "Police are on their way. Drop the iron and walk away."
Behind him, Lilly didn't scream. She simply took three quiet steps backward, melting completely into the pitch-black alcove of a locked service entrance.
The thugs didn't back down.
"Mind your own business, pretty boy!" the man with the tire iron snarled, lunging forward with terrifying speed.
Elliot raised his arms to block, but the heavy iron bar smashed into his forearm with a sickening crack of bone. Elliot gasped, his polished composure shattering into pure shock as a second heavy blow caught him across the temple. His vision swam, and within seconds, he collapsed onto the wet asphalt, stunned and bleeding, slipping out of consciousness.
"Check his pockets!" the man with the knife hissed.
Deep inside the shadow of the alcove, the air seemed to ripple and distort around Lilly. A soft, unnatural shift occurred in the darkness—a silent restructuring of shadow, weight, and silhouette.
Where the timid girl in the oversized jacket had been standing an instant ago, a tall, rough-looking young man stepped out into the neon light. He wore a battered leather jacket, a dark hoodie pulled low, and carried the lethal, fluid aura of someone born for violent streets.
He didn't speak. He just moved.
In one fluid, brutal motion, the newcomer kicked the tire iron directly out of the first attacker's hand, following through with a heavy elbow to the jaw that dropped the man instantly. The second thug lunged frantically with the knife, but the stranger caught his wrist mid-air, twisted it with horrifying force until the blade clattered away, and drove a knee hard into the man's ribs.
The entire exchange took less than four seconds.
The two thugs scrambled backward in terror, groaning in pain, before turning and fleeing blindly into the darkness.
The stranger stood still for a single second, breathing calmly over Elliot’s groaning, half-unconscious body. Then, turning toward the pitch-black alley mouth, the figure melted straight back into the shadows.
A faint, subtle ripple passed through the darkness once more.
A beat later, Lilly came rushing out of the alley shadows on trembling knees, her face a picture of pure, wide-eyed distress. She dropped to the damp pavement beside Elliot, who was blinking through a haze of blood and concussion.
"Elliot? Oh god, Elliot, can you hear me?" her voice cracked, rich with panic and raw emotion.
Elliot’s eyes opened a sliver. Through the throbbing pressure in his skull, he saw her hovering over him, tears brimming in her eyes, looking utterly helpless and terrified for his life.
"Lilly..." he rasped, his voice barely a whisper as he tried to lift a trembling hand. "Are... are you safe?"
"Yes, yes, I'm okay!" Lilly sobbed softly, pressing his hand gently back down to keep him still as she used a tissue to tenderly dab at his cut forehead. "Some guy ran out from the shadows and fought them off... He vanished into the dark, but you... you tried to protect me. You were so brave, Elliot. Just stay still, please..."
She wrapped his uninjured arm over her small shoulders, bracing her weight against his as he let out a weak groan, his vision fading back into complete blackness.
