Chapter 8

The blizzard hit the land with a vengeance. The pack was holed up inside for two days. They took turns training in the small indoor gym to not get behind in their skills. Davina was worried that she wouldn’t be able to shift to the full moon as she’d hoped. Trust the moon goddess. Selene would send her quiet comforts throughout the blizzard. Davina woke on the third day to children laughing outside. She peered through her window to find most of the pups in a full-out snowball fight. The blizzard had cleared, leaving a fresh blanket of snow in its wake. Davina quickly threw on some sweat pants and ran outside. She joined the snowball fight and ran around with the kids. Shortly after, she felt a large snowball hit her head. She turned to find Alex had joined in. She gathered up the biggest snowball she could muster and chucked it at him. It landed square in his face. He laughed and they were soon running around trying to hit each other. The others joined shortly after. All trying to best the other. After an hour of running around, the group found themselves in front of the fireplace warming up. “Are we still going for a run tonight?” Alex asked. “Yes, if you’re all up to it,” Davina answered. “Duh,” Alex replied, the others nodded in agreement. Davina smiled at them. They turned on their show and watched it the rest of the afternoon. The day seemed to drag on for Davina, her nerves continuing to build. She hadn’t shifted in over two years and was worried the pain would be as awful as it was the first time. Davina thought back to the first time she shifted, alone and scared in her corner of the basement. She had only shifted a few times in her life after that, always by herself. The moon rose slowly, as night began to fall. When it finally reached its peak, Chris went to get her. They joined the group downstairs and headed out to the forest. They reached a clearing where the tall evergreens allowed the moonlight to shine through, the soft snow covering the sound of them moving through the thick forest. “Ready?” Chris asked. Davina nodded her head. They all turned as she undressed, knowing she wasn't yet comfortable with nudity. She placed her clothes in a neat pile and then turned her focus to Selene. Ready Selene? Just relax and let me take over. Davina followed her instructions, allowing Selene to take control. Her fingers elongated into claws. Her back arched, she felt her bones break and shift into new places. It wasn’t comfortable, but not painful. The whole process took less than a minute. Selene looked at the moon with Davina and let out a howl. Selene turned to the group who were gawking at her. “You’re...you’re pure white.” Chris stuttered. Selene’s fur glowed, shimmering in the moonlight. Selene nodded her head and then gestured for them to shift. The group nodded their heads, swiftly undressed and shifted. The group ran off following Chris’s wolf. They ran for miles, tearing up the snow in their wake. After running for a while, they began the play fighting. They returned to the clearing nearly two hours later. “Your wolf is white?” Chris asked Davina after they had all changed. “Yes?” Davina asked in confusion. “Well, white wolves are extremely rare. They only appear once in a century. And I believe they have only ever been male.” “Chris finished. Davina was silent, looking at Chris with a worried expression. “We'll talk to dad about it in the morning.” The group headed back in silence, sensing Davina didn’t want to talk. Davina did not sleep well for the first time in months. Her head was swimming with Chris’s words. She hadn’t realized she was different from any normal wolf. Anxiety filled her body as she dreaded the conversation that was to come the following morning. We’re special love. Why didn’t you tell me? I knew you would find out when the time was right. Davina woke the next morning with dark circles lining her eyes. She skipped breakfast and curled into a ball on her bed, thoughts continuing to swim in her head. She didn’t notice Elsie had entered her room. “Davina,” she whispered. Davina bolted up right at the surprise guest. “I did knock.” “Sorry, I was lost in thought.” “Chris sent me to get you so we can talk to dad.” Davina nodded her head. Together they walked to the Alpha office. “Good morning,” Al greeted her cheerfully, “did you have a good run?” “Yes,” Davina answered. “It doesn’t look like you slept well? What’s going on?” “Just something Chris said.” “Ahh. He did fill me in. It isn’t anything to be worried about.” Davina looked at him with interest as he continued, “white wolves are incredibly rare but they are a gift from the moon goddess. They appear when a major event is on its way that may impact the entire werewolf community. Now, I’ve been doing some research, as normally white wolves are males. It turns out there is a prophecy about the first female white wolf. Apparently, she is to be the alpha of all alphas. One of the most powerful beings to ever walk the earth. This particular white wolf is to put an end to a major war that is prophesied to happen in the supernatural community. She is said to be handcrafted by the moon goddess herself.” Al finished. Davina stood silent for a few minutes, digesting the information. “And you think that’s me?” “Yes, I do.” “But… it can’t be. I’m not some all-powerful being. I’m not an alpha. I can’t…” Al interrupted her, “you absolutely can be. Stop doubting yourself. I knew you were special the moment I met you.” Davina sat there, still in disbelief. “Honestly V, stop doubting yourself. Look at how far you’ve come in six months,” Chris said. “You’ve already surpassed me in training. And I’ve been at it for years,” Elsie added. “My love, you just have to believe in yourself the way we do,” Cleo said. Davina nodded her head, “I trust you all, so if you think I am... I guess I can try to believe it too.” Cleo embraced her in a tight hug, “we’ll figure this out together.” “We need to research some more and figure out if you have any special gifts,” Al added, “we’ll also start special lessons to learn more about white wolves and, if you have any gifts, work on them in private. Of course, we will be transparent with the pack that you are a white wolf, but most do not know what that fully means. They’ll only know that they are rare, so we will keep the powers quiet until we know more.” Davina nodded her head, digesting the information. I always told you we were special. This special though? Why not? I don’t know… because it’s me? You’re pretty great though. So am I. Thanks Selene. Davina smiled after her conversation with her wolf. She looked around the room at her family, “ When do we start?” “Tomorrow,” Al answered, “Chris and Cleo will come to the lessons as well.” “Okay, tomorrow then.” Davina said with a sharp nod.
