Chapter 9

A few weeks later, Davina was sitting in Al’s office with Cleo and Chris going over some ancient manuscripts on white wolves. Al had gone through the pack’s archives before the first lesson and pulled out any documents pertaining to white wolves. They learned that in the past, each white wolf was able to control one element and all had the ability of telekinesis. They started with telekinesis, seeing that that should definitely be a power Davina should have. Al shared a meditation technique with Davina that helped her focus. After a few days, Davina was able to move small objects with her mind. She has practiced for the past few weeks and has moved on to large objects and can push and pull them. During the lessons they continued to read about white wolves and how to determine what element Davina would be able to manipulate. Davina sat at Al’s desk with four stone bowls set in front of her. The bowls were filled with the four elements: earth, water, fire, and air, although the bowl of air didn’t actually contain air. “Okay Davina,” Al said, “now all you need to do is focus on your breathing and whichever element is yours will be drawn to you. It’s supposed to do something, it isn’t clear what.” Davina nodded her head and began her breathing exercises. She shut off her mind and felt Selene do the same. After a few minutes, Davina was in a complete trance. She could feel the different elements in her mind, each feeling familiar. After a few minutes, she heard her family gasp. Davina snapped her eyes open and looked at the four bowls. In each was a miniature wolf, all created from different elements. “All four…” Al stammered. Davina looked at him, “Dad?” “Well, it’s unheard of. Being able to control all four elements, it’s well...I honestly don’t know.” “Maybe I manipulated it somehow?” “No, we were all watching,” Chris stated, “my sister would be one of a kind.” He grinned at Davina. “Well, this changes a lot.” Al said, “we’ll have to work to come up with a strategic learning plan. Figure out which element we should start with.” “Water,” Davina said, “I’ve always been comfortable in water.” “Okay, we'll figure out what is most logical to come next as we start with it then.” Davina continued her lessons in the following weeks. Working tirelessly to get a grasp on her new powers. In the blink of an eye, Christmas was upon them. Davina woke up on Christmas morning, excited. She hadn’t felt this giddy since she was a child. She quickly dressed in a sweater and leggings and met her family for breakfast. They had a light conversation as they ate and then made their way to the lounge room to exchange gifts, saving the best for last. Al and Cleo handed Davina a small box. She undid the ribbon and tore the paper off. She opened the velvet box to find a beautiful white-gold bracelet with little clasps that hung from it. “It’s beautiful, thank you,” Davina said. “My turn,” Elsie chimed and handed Davina a small box. She opened it and found a little charm with two hands connected in a pinky promise, something the two often did themselves. “Oh, it goes on the clasp!” Davina said as she connected the charm to the bracelet. “Yea! I have one too!” Elsie showed her bracelet full of charms she'd received over the years. “It’s beautiful,” Davina admired. “We thought you should have one,” Cleo said. “Here’s mine.” Chris joined, handing her another small box. Davina opened it and found two wolves playing tug of war. Davina let out a small giggle and attached the small charm. They finished exchanging gifts and decided to play a movie that they watched in a comfortable silence. Davina left halfway through the movie to go get a snack, where she found Alex in the kitchen. “Merry Christmas sugar plum!” “Merry Christmas Alex!” Davina walked over and gave him a brief hug. He pulled away and handed a small box to her, “you too?” Alex laughed as Davina opened the box, finding a small sugar plum fairy. “Oh, I love it!” Davina attached the charm and hugged Alex again. He smiled at her and ruffled her hair. “Anything for you, sugar plum.” “What’d I miss?” Tommy asked as he entered the kitchen. “Only Alex, giving me the cutest charm ever.” Davina said, jangling the charm bracelet in his face. Alex raised his eyebrows at Tommy, “see if you can top that." Tommy laughed as he left. “Merry Christmas Davina," his voice dropped low, almost a whisper. “Merry Christmas, Thomas,” Davina looked at him, losing herself in his bright blue eyes. Davina's heart hammered in her chest, for a reason she didn't understand. He grabbed Davina’s hand, placing a small box in it. She opened the box and found a white wolf howling at a small diamond moon. Davina gasped and looked up at him, “it’s beautiful Tommy.” Tommy pushed a stray hair that had fallen in Davina’s face behind her ear, “not as beautiful as you.” Davina blushed fiercely. Tommy grinned and placed a small warm kiss on her cheek. “Thank you Tommy.” She said through a tight throat. Tommy wrapped his arms around her tightly, his warmth comforting her. Eventually, he pulled away, "See ya later, V." He winked, before leaving Davina alone as she attempted to gather her thoughts.
