The remaining week passed by in the blink of an eye. Davina found herself enjoying life for the first time in over a decade. Tonight she will officially join the lunar pack. Her nerves were eating hat her as she laid in bed staring at the ceiling. Someone knocked at the door, urging her to get up. “Come on lazy,” Elsie said through the door. Davina continued to stare at the ceiling, refusing to move, “if you don’t get up I’ll come in and get you myself.” Davina continued to lie there in silence. She heard a key turn and the door burst open to reveal a flustered Elsie. Davina sat up and looked at her. “Really? You couldn’t have just got up? We need to go to breakfast.” Elsie said, staring at Davina with crossed arms.
“I’m not hungry,” Davina said.
“I don’t care if you’re hungry or not. You're on a strict diet plan you have to follow if you want to get healthy,” Elsie said, then noticing the worry etched on Davina’s face she walked over and sat next to her on the bed, “everything’s going to go fine tonight V. You don’t have to worry.”
“I can’t help it…”
“I know,” Elsie pulled her into a hug, “everyone you’ve met so far already adores you. Honestly, it’s going to be okay.” Elsie continued to hold Davina for a few minutes longer until Davina pulled away.
“Okay, let’s go eat,” Davina said, defeated. She followed Elsie into the kitchen where Leah was waiting with her arms crossed.
“I was about to come fetch you myself,” Leah said sternly as she handed Davina her breakfast smoothie.
“I’ll make sure she is at every single meal until she’s done with her diet plan.” Elsie said.
“Honestly, can I not be hungry for like one meal?” Davina said, jokingly.
“No,” they answered in unison causing chuckles to erupt among the group.
“It’s just nerves,” Davina sighed.
“I know love,” Leah said, “but you can’t miss a single meal, not until you’re healthy anyway. Now out of my kitchen,” she said, shooing Elsie and Davina into the banquet hall.
The two girls found Chris and Tommy and joined them at their table. “Where’s Alex?” Elsie asked.
“He’s with his dad,” Chris answered, “He’s helping him prepare for the ceremony tonight.” Elsie nodded, accepting to answer.
“You ready for tonight?” Tommy asked Davina. Davina shrugged with downcast eyes.
“You’ll be alright, V.” Chris said, “Everyone already loves you.”
“That’s what I said,” Elsie agreed.
“And we’ll be up there with you,” Tommy said with a wink. Davina gave them all a small smile, thanking them for their support.
The day passed quickly after that. Davina met with Mary that afternoon who helped her work through her nerves. She felt a little better about the ceremony after. Davina later found herself pacing in her room that evening, waiting for the moon to show her face so the ceremony could begin. A knock on her door brought her out of her trance. “Come in!”
Cleo glided into the bedroom holding a white linen dress, “This is for you,” she said, handing it over to Davina.
“Thank you.” Davina said, taking the dress.
“Do you want me to help you get ready?”
“Yes, I’ll go get changed.” Davina came out of the bathroom a few minutes later in the dress. The white linen made her pale skin look like it was glowing. The sickly gray undertone was finally gone, replaced with a rosy glow.
“Beautiful,” Cleo smiled. She gestured at the vanity for Davina to sit. Cleo began brushing her hair out before pulling Davina’s hair into a high pony. She pulled out some simple diamond earrings and handed them to Davina to put on. “You look perfect,” Cleo said, “are you ready?”
“Ready as ever.”
Cleo grabbed Davina’s hand and led her to the outdoor auditorium. There was a small stage set up where the alpha, beta, and gamma families sat. Cleo led her up the stage and to her seat. The pack sat on blankets and pillows laid out on the grass with their families and friends. Alastair stood and walked to the front of the stage.
“Hello and welcome. Tonight we will welcome Davina into our pack...our family. Before we start, Davina would like to share her story with you all,” Al said and gestured for Davina to join him. Davina stood with shaking hands and walked over to Al.
“Hello. As some of you know, I came here barely a week ago,” Davina paused, taking a deep breath before continuing, “ I was abused and tortured by my pack. I came here broken and this pack is already helping fix me.”
A gasp broke out in the audience. Davina continued, “They accused me of murdering my parents at just six years old and have treated me as a slave since. I was only freed when alpha Alastair found me. I was getting ready to run away. I’m glad I decided to go with him and Luna Cleo. I tell you this not because I want to be pitied... I just don’t want to have to hide myself here. I can’t express how grateful I am to all of you. Everyone I’ve already met has treated me with so much kindness. And I hope I can prove myself to all of you by protecting you as a pack should.”
The entire audience stood and bowed their heads to Davina, paying her the ultimate respect. After a few moments, they all sat again as Alastair began the ceremony. He gave a short speech about the pack and their duties towards each other before turning to her, “Davina, will you protect this pack to the best of your ability?”
“I will.”
“And do you promise to put the interest of the packs before your own?”
“I do.” Davina breathed. Al took a knife and created a small knick on his palm. He let a few drops of blood fall into the silver chalice that was sitting in front of them. Al handed the knife to Davina, who mimicked his exact motions. Their blood sizzled at the contact with the silver. Al chanted a few words while looking at the full moon and looked at Davina after he finished.
“From this day forward I declare you, Davina Smith, a member of the lunar pack. Welcome,” Al embraced her in a hug.
Davina felt a rush of warmth from the glow of the moon as it shone down on her. After a few moments, the warmth receded as the initiation was completed and then she heard hundreds of voices mind-linking her.
Welcome.
