Chapter 5

Davina woke up the next morning feeling rested for once in her life. She thought about staying in bed all day when she heard a knock. She slowly stood and made her way to the door where she found Elsie standing with clothes in hand. “Good morning,” Elsie smiled, “I thought you might need something to wear for the day. I’ll take you shopping this afternoon!” “Oh, you don’t need to do that,” Davina said, accepting the clothes. “Nonsense, it’s already been decided. Breakfast is in thirty minutes,” she turned, bouncing back to her room. Davina walked into the large bathroom and smiled to herself. She enjoyed Elsie’s quirkiness. She turned to the shower and put the water onto the hottest setting. She stood under the water long enough for her fingers to turn pruney before she decided to wash. She got out and quickly dressed with a few minutes to spare. She brushed through her long hair and weaved it into a quick braid. She had just finished when she heard a knock. “You ready?” Elsie chimed. Davina opened the door and followed her down to the kitchen where they met Cleo. “Davina, this is Leah,” she pointed to a woman who gave her a motherly smile, “she has been given your diet plan and will ensure that you follow it to a T.” Leah nodded in agreement and handed her a smoothie. The dietitian said solids would be too much for you right now, so it’s strictly liquids for the first month. “We’ll get you healthy in no time,” Leah smiled. Davina took the smoothie and took a small sip. “It’s delicious, thank you,” Davina said. “Mom, I’m taking Davina shopping later, so she doesn’t have to live in sweats.” Elsie chimed. “Okay, but we have a meeting this morning.” “I know, I told her this afternoon. We’ll go after lunch.” Cleo nodded, “Davina, we’re going to meet with Al and Chris this morning just so you know more about us. Then we’ll give you a tour of the land.” Davina nodded in acknowledgement. She slowly finished her smoothie then followed Cleo and Elsie to the Alpha office. Sitting behind a large desk was Al with Chris leaning by his side looking over some paperwork. “Ah Davina, you’re looking well rested,” Al stood to greet her. He walked over and gave her a warm hug. Davina was shocked at the warm gesture, after hearing the many rumors of how cold the alpha was. “Thank you, I’m feeling much better. I can’t thank you enough for...” “No need to thank us. We’re all happy to help you in any way we can,” Chris interrupted with a smile. “Please take a seat,” Al gestured to the large sofa. Davina sat contently, “now, as you know, we are the lunar pack. We are the biggest pack in America and there is one reason for that,” Davina listened contently, “we take in people like you. People who have been wronged or thrown out of their homes. We care for each other, which makes us strong. Once you recover, we’ll train you and love you like family because that is how it works here. I know there are rumors of how ruthless we can be and it's true to an extent. We care deeply for each other, so if we're ever threatened, we can be harsh to protect our home.” he finished with a smile, “now you don’t have to share if you don’t wish to, but why did they treat you that way? The rumors made sense and Alistair's explanation eased some of her nerves. She hesitated for a moment and then shared the story of what happened to her parents. “They really thought you killed your parents at six years old?” Chris asked in disbelief. “I guess they didn’t really have any other answer. Isaacs testimony didn't help either,” Davina answered. “I’m sorry they did that to you,” Al said, “I want you to know that you have a home here, if you wish to join a new pack.” “I’d love to if you'd have me,” Davina said with no hesitation. After all the care she had been shown in just a couple of days, she knew she wouldn’t leave by choice. “Of course.” Al smiled, “we’ll perform the ceremony this weekend. Now let’s show you around” The family first walked her through the packhouse, showing her the dining hall and the lounge, which is where most of the people her age hung out. They hopped in a gator and drove her around the massive land. There was a small community down the road from the packhouse for those who had started families and had grown out of it. The hospital which Davina was quite familiar with at that point. They drove past the training grounds where she saw multiple different training sessions going on. The borders stretched for miles. Davina was simply amazed. By the time the tour was finished, lunch time had come around. Elsie and Davina found a seat and Davina quietly sipped her smoothie, lost in thought. “Hiya Els,” a devilish voice rang out. Davina looked behind her to find Chris and two around guys his age coming to sit with them. Davina panicked at the act of meeting new people but shook it out of her head as Chris sat by her. The two extras sat on either side of Elsie. “Hi Tommy,” Elsie answered the curly-headed blonde with piercing blue eyes. He was just as big as Chris and had a dazzling smile. He observed Davina with interest, causing her to squirm under his intense gaze. “Tommy, Alex, this is Davina. My new best friend,” Elsie smiled. Davina choked on her smoothie and giggled at Elsie’s statement. “Nice to meet you, I'm Thomas, but you can call me Tommy.” He extended his hand, which she shook. “When did you get here?” Alex asked. He had skin the color of chocolate and bright hazel eyes. He stretched his hand across the table to reach hers. While Tommy looked like he could get into all kinds of mischief, Alex would've been his opposite. He seemed quiet and gentle. “A couple of days ago,” Davina said, taking his hand. “Really?” Tommy questioned, “why haven't we met yet?” “Well...” Davina started. “None of your business,” Chris interrupted, “I apologize on his behalf. He is supposed to be my beta, but we’ll see how that goes. He doesn’t know when to shut his mouth.” “It’s okay, are you the next gamma then?” She asked Alex, who nodded his head. “And to answer your question, Tommy, I was in the hospital.” Tommy looked at her, eyes filling with shame. “I’m sorry…” He had noticed she was pale and too thin, giving her a sickly look. She was still beautiful and knew she'd be a knock out once healthy. “No, don’t be. I don’t want to hide here.” Davina said, “my last pack abused me. I don’t want it to be a secret.” She stated, looking at Chris. He nodded his head with a small smile. “They did what?” Tommy said, “which pack?” The fury in his eyes indicated he wanted to hunt them down and kill them all. “You guys are awfully protective here, huh?” Their reputation came to mind again, but she could understand why they gained it in the first place, being so protective of each other. “It’s unacceptable,” Alex stated matter of factly. “It’s handled.” Chris stated, ending the conversation. “At your uniting ceremony, do you want to share your story?” Davina thought about it for a moment before nodding her head. “We’ll arrange it.” “Thank you.” “Well, I’m glad that’s all sorted,” Elsie stated, “you ready to go?” Davina nodded again, taking the last sip of her smoothie. “Where're you going?” the three questioned. “Shopping, idiots. Chris, give me your card, please.” Elsie said with her hand out and a broad grin. “Uh uh, we’re going with you,” he responded with a smirk. “Fine, whatever, let’s go. We’ve got to get this girl out of sweats.” Davina followed them to the same SUV that brought her here. Chris hopped in the driver's seat and took off to the mall which was almost an hour away to the nearest human town. They spent the remainder of the afternoon going from store to store, Elsie hand picking everything for Davina. “Els, I really don’t need all of this.” Davina said, hauling more bags than her arms could carry, “you’re spending too much.” “No, we’re spending the right amount. You need all of this,” Elsie countered, “besides, that’s why I agreed for them to come along, so they could carry everything.” She gestured to the three men, “give them some of the bags.” “Not fair.” Tommy said, taking some bags from Davina. “You wanted to come, so you have to work. You interrupted a girl’s only day, so you have to make up for it.” Elsie hummed. After hours of shopping, they finally returned to the packhouse. Elsie helped Davina unpack everything into her once empty closet, which was now full. Davina pulled her into a hug, “thank you Els.” “Of course.” Elsie hugged back. These are good people, a voice sounded in Davina's head. Selene! I’ve missed you so much. I know, I've missed you. I’ve had to rest. I’m sorry I’ve been silent. After healing you from the torture room a few weeks ago, it really wore on me. It didn’t help that our mate rejected us. It's been awful without you. I’ll never leave you again, I promise.
