Davina opened her eyes slowly, her groggy brain trying to recall where she was at. The bright, luminescent lights blinded her before her eyes finally adjusted. She looked around the hospital room in panic when her eyes landed on a girl around her age with straight, black hair and emerald green eyes. The girl noticed Davina looking at her and a smile immediately formed on her face. “Hi!” she chirped. Her smile and bubbliness were usually contagious to whomever she was around.
“Hi..” Davina said cautiously, “who are you?”
“Oh right, I’m Elsie! I’m the Alpha’s daughter.”
“Oh,” Davina relaxed, seeing the similarities between Elsie and Cleo, “how long have I been asleep?”
“A day and half,” Elsie replied, “you slept the whole day yesterday. I’ll go get Dr. Paige,” Elsie said before bouncing out of the room. Davina sat up slowly and pulled the plush blanket down to evaluate herself. The last of her bruising was fading and her ribs barely ached when she pushed on them.
“I see you’re doing my job for me,” Dr. Paige said with a smile as she entered the room. Davina looked up, sheepishly. A blush formed on her face, the most color she's had in years. “Well, what’s your assessment?”
“Almost all of my bruising is gone and my ribs are only a little achy,” Davina answered.
“Yes, it appears the treatment has been doing its job. You’re almost fully healed,” Paige smiled, “now, you know you are extremely malnourished?”
“I…,”Davina paused, “I mean, yeah.”
“The road to recovery doesn’t stop at physical wellness. I’ve asked a dietitian and therapist I know to come here to help you get healthy, both in weight and mentally. They’re here now. Would you like to meet them?”
Tears welled in Davina’s eyes as she nodded her head, “thank you.” She was unable to wrap her head around the kindness she was being shown. She hasn't felt anything like it in years.
Paige left and returned with two women. One was tall and middle aged. She wore a tight pencil skirt with a silk blouse and her blonde hair was pulled back in a sleek bun. The other was a shorter, plump woman that had begun graying. Her smile instantly eased Davina's nerves. “Davina, meet Tonia. She’ll be your dietitian,” she pointed to the blonde, “and this is Mary, she’s a therapist.” Both women gave her a warm smile.
“It’s nice to meet all of you,” Davina said with a small smile. At that moment, Cleo came bursting through the door, causing Davina and the other women to jump at the intrusion.
“Is she awake!? Elsie mind-linked me that she was awake!” Cleo exclaimed as she caught eyes with Davina, “oh my love, my husband forces me to go shower and you wake up while I’m away. I’m so sorry, I told you I wouldn’t leave.”
“It’s okay,” Davina smiled, “this is the most kindness I’ve received in a long time. I’m truly overwhelmed with gratitude. I can’t even begin to thank you..” Davina was cut off as Cleo grabbed her into a tight hug.
“Careful now, Luna,” Paige said, amusement in her voice.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” Cleo released Davina, who was smiling at her, “I’d like to remain involved in your recovery process, if that’s okay with you?”
“Of course you can,” Davina agreed, “you saved me.” Cleo turned away, her eyes growing misty. The women talked for many hours and came up with a plan that should have Davina back to a healthy weight in a few months. Both Cleo and Elsie assured Tonia they would monitor Davina's diet closely, not letting her miss a single meal. Mary set up appointments with Davina three times a week and was hoping they would be able to cut back to two within the next six months. Dr. Paige released Davina shortly after, as ninety-five percent of her injuries were fully healed.
“Come on love, you’re going to be staying in our wing.” Cleo led her to the Alpha family's side of the pack house later that evening.
“Oh you don’t have to do that! I know it’s not tradit…”
“Nonsense, everyone has agreed. Your room is right next to Elsie’s,” Cleo opened the door to Davina’s new room. A large four-poster bed sat in the center with ivory silk bedding. A large walk-in closet and en suite bathroom were to the right. A forest green, velvet furniture set was situated a ways behind the bed in front of large picture windows that faced the dense forestry.
“This is all for me?” Davina stared in shock. She hadn't had her own room in years. After that tragic day, they immediately put her in the basement. Cleo smiled widely and nodded. Tears welled in Davina’s eyes yet again as she hugged Cleo tight, “thank you so much.”
“Of course,” Cleo squeezed back, “if you need anything at all I’m just down the hall, okay? Rest now, I’ll see you in the morning.”
Davina looked around the room before settling in for the night. The en-suite and closet were next to each other, so she wouldn't have to walk far to change after showering. The closet was bigger than her previous "room" with a large vanity and walls lined with shelves. A small glass chandelier hung above a cream leather ottoman that was centered in the middle of the room. She ventured into the en-suite, the floor and walls made from the same marble tiles, which continued into the shower only distinguishable by the sliding glass door and large waterfall spout hanging from the ceiling. Davina groaned, wanting to stand under the warm water now, but could feel sleep lulling her to bed. Her feet dragged her towards the bed but she walked over to the large picture windows first. She had a view of the large forest, strewn out behind the packhouse. Large evergreens towered over the land, the moon shining brightly, lighting the way for the patrol. She ran her fingers along the soft velvet of the sofa, sighing contently as she admired the view. Davina finally made her way to the bed, pulling back the lush comforter before curling into the blankets, its softness enveloping her in a cocoon. She drifted off into the first peaceful sleep she'd had in many years.
