Nolen, Samara and Monroe were found to be the best suited for the mission. They were well qualified to repair the space probe. Launch date: 2 May 2048.
They had already left the ground, completed everything as per protocol, and then sat down to play cards. There were no problems. The days went by uneventfully.
One night they woke up to find that something had hit the ship and damaged it quite badly. All the crew members grabbed their scavengers and worked to solve the problem. They discovered that the meteorite that had hit the ship had drilled into the ship. Nolen went to get tools to fix the problem as soon as possible. Monroe placed a small piece of the meteorite in a sterile bag and then removed the meteorite from the side of the ship.
Nolen worked to repair what the meteor had torn off, while Monroe spied a piece of the meteorite. An alarm was sounded, the control center logged in, leaving the search behind and heading for the ship's brain. Nolen and Samara were waiting for him. The controller hadn't even begun to speak.
A worm-like creature crawled out of the meteor fragment left behind and crawled along the table until it fell to the ground. Its peristaltic movement landed it in the ventilation system.
Once the controller was done, everyone could finally get back to work. Samara decided to rest. She was finding it increasingly difficult to bear the confinement and the two men. Sometimes she even hallucinated, and it didn't help that she couldn't sleep properly. She just stared at the ceiling. He heard a strange sound coming from the vent, but he put it down to Nolen still repairing the side of the machine.
He went outside to get some refreshments. Then he heard the noise coming from the vent again. It was getting more and more disturbing to him. He went to Monroe, who was still spying on the meteor. And, wearing headphones. His plan was to use an instrument to scan the vent.
Monroe took out the instrument and watched from the ship's central system as it moved further and further up the vent. Samara was worried, and Monroe wasn't sure what they were looking for. He blindly followed Samara. They watched the first section, but saw nothing out of the ordinary.
The ventilation was clean. Samara no longer trusted herself, it must have been the confinement that made her hear noises. Monroe returned to the meteor. And Samara had to do the paperwork for the day. But after a few hours, she noticed that it was too quiet. Even if Nolen had finished his work, they hadn't seen each other since. Samara got up and went to the damaged part of the boat.
The repairs to the ship had apparently been successful. However, Nolen was not there, tools were lying scattered about and the ventilation door was open. This was not like Nolen. He always packed neatly behind him.
Samara set off to search every inch of the boat. She couldn't find it anywhere. Samara's pacing had caught the eye of Monroe, who decided to lend a hand. Samara again heard voices coming from the vent, but this time Monroe heard them too. They both looked towards the vent.
She climbed into the vent, despite Monroe's warnings. She moved forward slowly. She went from one section to the next, keeping in constant contact with Monroe. Samara began to scream. Monroe desperately tried to damage the vent so that Samara could get out.
Samara fell down. The blood in Monroe's veins stopped. Something was eating Samara's body from the inside. She vomited blood. And there were little holes all over her body with blood pouring out. A tiny worm crawled out of her abdomen. Monroe screamed. He ran straight to the lab where he was examining the meteorite. One of the meteorite's inner cavities was hiding a large number of larvae. He grabbed his heart and ran for the weapons.
In this room, he found Nolen, already half-eaten by a much larger worm. Monroe didn't need much, they grow so big in such a short time from the nutrients in the human body.
Monroe shivered. He raised a gun and fired twice at the worm, to no avail. In the doorway, the worm emerged from Samara's body. Growing incredibly large. The worms consisted of a single mouth. Monroe fired without thinking. The two worms crawled to his side, all the while Monroe heard the alarm. But the man had no chance to react. His body immediately became food for the worms.
At the control centre, the controller wanted to warn the crew that several meteorites might contain creatures from an unknown planet.
The message never got through, and the ship was never found.
