By the time I arrived at my apartment, Kate was already waiting in the living room, her arms folded and her legs crossed like she had been holding questions in all day.
“Finally!” Kate exclaimed as soon as she saw me “I thought I would die waiting.”
I shook my head, laughing at Kate’s reaction. “I didn’t even stay that long.” She argued.
“Yeah, sure.” She scoffed. “Not that I blame you. I wouldn’t want to leave if I were in the presence of a man as hot as Sebastian Kane.”
“Kate!”
“What?! You know that man is literal s*x on legs. You would be stupid not to consider—”
“Okay!!” I shrieked, my cheeks starting to redden. “Can we not talk about my soon-to-be boss like that?” I pleaded, knowing that my friend had a sharp, wild man especially when it came to hot men.
Yes, you heard me right.
I think I know Sebastian is hot.
I would be blind not to see that.
“Fine fine. I’ll shut up.” Kate nodded. “Tell me. How was your day at Kane Capital? What did you guys discuss?! Oh, I want to know everything!” She rapped as I pushed myself to the couch and crashed on it.
The cheap foam drew my attention back to Mr Kane’s and his luxurious sofas.
Gosh! I’m so jealous. What race did he win at birth to be so rich?
Releasing a strained sigh, I broke the not-so-heartbreaking news to Kate. “I didn’t go to Kane Capital,” I said nonchalantly, kicking off my shoes.
“I went to Mr Vale’s house.”
Kate entered a state of shock for a few seconds. I had to raise my head to be sure she was still breathing. She blinked repeatedly, like she was making sure she heard correctly.
“You mean you went to his house?! As in, his house house? Like, the Vale freaking Mansion?!”
Okay, how did Kate know he had a mansion and I was just finding out?!
“Yes.” I replied, standing so I could head toward the kitchen.”And, before you get excited, no, I didn’t get a house tour.”
Kate’s jaw drops, a sharp, disbelieving sound leaving her throat. “You’re joking. You were in a billionaire’s house and didn’t snoop around? What the f**k were you doing then? Staring at his face? Not that it would be a problem though.” She smirks like a creep and I almost roll my eyes.
“I had a contract shoved in my face,” I said, grabbing a glass of water. “Touring his extremely beautiful house didn’t seem like a priority…at the time.”
Kate nodded in understanding. After a while, her head snaps up again. “Wait, wait, wait. Did you ask him why he was staying at a hotel when he has a house big enough to swallow three families?”
I pause mid-sip then slowly lower the glass. “That didn’t even cross my brain. Once I saw the contract, my brain switched into survival mode.”
Kate groaned dramatically, flopping onto the couch. “You are hopeless. That is literally the kind of thing normal people would be curious about.”
“Normal people don’t get offered sixty-five thousand dollars a month to smile professionally,” I shot back, setting the glass down. “My brain had priorities.”
Kate sat up again, suddenly more serious but still amused. “And now what? You’re actually doing it?”
“I’m actually doing it,” I confirmed, grabbing my bag and heading toward the room. “But I’ve got a lot to go through tonight before I start properly tomorrow.”
Kate followed me to the hallway, leaning against the doorframe. “You sure about this? It’s not too late to run, you know.”
I give her a small look over her shoulder, half tired, half determined. “Run where? Back to sending resumes into the void or to looking for measly jobs like the one at the hotel? No thanks. This is the best chance I’ve got.”
I know she’s just looking out for me, especially with the circumstances surrounding my ‘Job’.
Kate softened a little at that, then nodded slowly. “Alright then. Go be a corporate girlie.”
I laughed under my breath. “Don’t call it that.”
Kate grinned. “Too late. I’m proud of you anyway.”
“Don’t get emotional,” I said, already slipping into my room. “I need sleep or I’ll embarrass myself tomorrow.”
Kate lifted a hand in a mock salute. “Fine. I’m heading to my night shift anyway. Try not to marry a billionaire while I’m gone.”
“Go,” I laughed, throwing a pillow lightly at her.
Kate dodged it easily, still laughing as she grabbed her bag. “Good luck, secretary.”
The door clicked shut behind me and I quickly changed out of my clothes before pulling the Torres’s Resorts file and spreading it across the bed, wanting to prove a point to Sebastian.
I am going to be an amazing secretary.
By the time I finally collapsed back on my pillow, my eyes were heavy but my mind was still running through numbers and names that were all over the Torres file.
“Let’s do this, Alessia,” I mutter to myself before finally letting the sleep drag me under.
The next morning came too fast, sunlight slipping through the curtains like it had no respect for my exhaustion. I blink awake, staring at the ceiling for a second before the memory of my job snaps me fully awake.
“It’s my first day at work,” I whispered to myself, almost disbelieving.
I jump out of bed and run into the shower, moving with a kind of nervous excitement I can’t fully explain. I picked a corporate set I had bought recently; a brown corporate shirt and a black pencil skirt.
I make a mental note to go clothes shopping once I get my first pay.
I put my hair in a sleek ponytail, keeping my makeup minimal, just enough to look put together without trying too hard. I grab my bag, check it twice, and then leave the house with my heart beating faster than normal.
The moment the fresh morning air hits my face, the reality of it all dawns on me.
This was really happening.
