Chapter Two

1434 Words
I paced in the cold cell underneath the Pack House, my mind full of static. After Misty caught me saving the vampire, the rest of the night became a blur. I remember her mind link forcing me to shift again as she called to Alpha Nathan. I turned back to where the Vampire stood but he was nowhere to be found. I let out a small growl of frustration as I began to get surrounded by my pack mates. After that, I only remembered pacing in this cell. My feet were aching from the continuous movement, but sitting down made me feel even more trapped. So I continued to pace, brush my hair out of my face, and wait. My chest ached, telling me my mate was in emotional pain. I could only imagine what others were saying about me, what Misty was saying. I knew the pack laws. I knew that we were to kill any trespassers, but something inside me kept telling me that killing him was wrong.  A snarl escaped my throat as my wolf argued with me. She was on the same side as the pack. She felt betrayed by me and my actions. I brushed my hair back for the umpteenth time, turning around to continue my pacing when I heard a door open at the end of the hallway. My head snapped up as I listened a pair of footsteps walk down the corridor towards my cell. A tall figure stepped up to my cell and I recognized Alpha Nathan’s grey eyes. I could see the betrayal and anger in them. I kept my blue eyes downcast from his, showing some form of submission in order to not piss him off further. I heard a bang on the cells and I jumped slightly. Glancing up, I saw his fist bleeding against the rough bars. His head was bowed as his brows furrowed. He took in a deep breath before he looked back up to me. “Just tell me why, Esmeray. Why in hell would you save one of those creatures?” He asked me through gritted teeth. I watched him for what seemed like minutes, but I couldn’t think of a reasonable response. My mouth was left open, but no words would come out. I took a breath and shook my head defeatedly. “I don’t know what came over me Alpha. I have no words.” I told him. He shook his head, disgust mixing with the other emotions in his eyes. “If this was some mistake, I’d be able to let you off easy. But Misty saw you shift into your human form after killing the rogues. You showed no aggression towards that vampire. How can I get the other pack members to be okay with that, Esmeray?” He demanded. I kept my head low as I shook my head and shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know if you can Alpha. I know what I did was and act of betrayal to the pack.”  “And do you know what the consequences are for betraying the pack?” He asked me. I nodded softly to his question. Of course I knew what the consequences were. We’ve only had to enforce them once since Nathan became Alpha. “Exile, Alpha.” I answered. Alpha Nathan nodded grimly as he watched me in my cell. There was a long silence as we debated what our next words would be. After a moment, I spoke up. “Archer wont be punished will he? He’s a loyal pack member, he had no involvement whatsoever.” Alpha Nathan nodded. “He’ll be fine, I’ll make sure we take care of him.” He promised me.  I nodded as I leaned against the back wall of the cell. My mind and my heart was racing. I knew there was no getting out of this, no matter my loyalty to the pack. I looked down at my feet as I debated my next words. “So what happens now? I don’t expect a trial, but do I get a moment to pack my things?” I ask him. He shakes his head. “No, you’ll be chased out of here in the next 24 hours. Archer will pack a bag for you that we’ll give to you at the border. Once you’re past the border, he will take back his promise as a mate and reject you. Then I will sentence you to exile and declare you a rogue. After that, you are to never cross our borders again or you will be executed on sight.” The explanation hit me hard, harder than I wanted it to. I could feel the tears build up in my eyes but I fought them back. After a long moment I nodded in understanding. Alpha Nathan watched me for a few more minutes before turning to leave. “We’ll come for you when it’s time. In the meantime, you wont receive any meals, your water intake will be limited, and no one is allowed to visit you.” He said before walking away. I continued to lean against the wall when he left, the slam of the door came as a sound of finality. After hours of pacing I finally sank down and curled my knees up to my chest. Sobs wracked in my chest and I fought to keep them under control. I couldn’t cry, my emotions were too all over the place to focus on crying. The one thing I did try to focus on, was to remain strong in order to take as much pain off of Archer as possible. I still felt the ache in my chest that told me he was in pain, but I tried to calm my erratic nerves to soothe him. After a while, exhaustion hit me and I felt myself slip into a dark and restless sleep. ~~~~~~~~ *Present Time* I watch as my old pack mates leave the border, leaving me to venture off outside. I tied my hair back and I started to walk away from the border. I didn’t know where to go or what to do. The Dark Moon Pack was all I had ever known. I only visited other packs when my Alpha had requested me to go. I stopped in my tracks and tried to get a sense of where I was. From what I could tell, I was chased to the western border. The closest city was around 50 miles south of the border. I let out a long breath as I started making my way around the border, making sure I stayed a few hundred feet away to not let my scent mix in on the other side. I kept to my human form to show no signs aggression. I ran at a steady pace, my muscles burning from the lack of energy but the instinct to survive kept me going. I kept the pace for about 5 miles before I slowed to a walk. I was close enough to the southern border, I could smell the scents from my fight with the rogues. I could also smell the sick scent of the vampire. My nostrils scrunched up as my wolf growled. The last thing I wanted to do was remember that night. I started to turn towards the south when I heard something rustling. Automatically, I turn back to growl, my teeth bared Incase an ex pack member tried to attack me. Instead, I saw a piece of paper tacked to the trunk of a nearby tree. Furrowing my brows in confusion, I walked over and pulled the piece of paper to read it. ‘I am in your debt for saving my life. If you ever find yourself in need of help, follow my scent to my home. ~C’ I read the note over and over. So the vampire is offering to help me after getting me exiled. I let out a frustrated sigh as I debated internally. If I followed his scent, I might be able to gain my bearing long enough to find a new pack. However, it felt like another betrayal to my old pack. If I continued South to the city I could try to find a job and survive like a human would. However, I would be homeless for who knows how long. I bit my lip as I debated, my wolf obviously not wanting to accept the help of a vampire, but common sense told me to take the help where I could. Letting out a deep sigh, I made my choice. I took a deep sniff of the piece of paper to get his scent before I stripped my clothes and shifted. hanging onto the scent in my mind, I began to track the vampire through the forest.
