Lil Sam looked up at Jennifer, rubbing his eyes. “Mommy, you’re not just going to look at me and leave, are you? You’re really taking me with you, right?”
Jennifer pulled him into a tight hug, her whole body trembling. “Yes, baby, we’re never going to be apart again.”
Lil Sam started to cry loudly, clinging to Jennifer as if he was afraid she’d disappear if he let go.
Jennifer gently soothed him, “Shh, don’t cry too loudly. If someone hears, Mommy won’t be able to take you with me.”
Even though he was only two, Lil Sam was very perceptive. He immediately clamped his mouth shut, trying hard to stop the sobs from escaping.
Jennifer released him and said softly, “Stay here and be good for just a minute. I’ll be right back.”
