Kenzie POV
I reached for Travis’s hand and held on tight, never wanting to let go. We walked to his car and he opened the door for me. After he got in, we headed toward our destination. “Where are we going?”
He let out a soft chuckle. “If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise, now would it?” We drove in silence, both of smiling and stealing glances at each other. I was so caught up in his facial features, studying every detail, that I didn’t realize that we had arrived.
“We’re here.” He hopped out of the car and came to open my door. I steeped out into the warm evening air and looked around.
“Seriously? You brought to me to play putt-putt golf?” I let out a squeal of delight. “I haven’t played since I was a kid!”
“So, you like it?” he wondered.
“Hell yeah! I’m so excited!”
I grabbed his hand and we practically ran to the entrance. We gabbed our golf balls and putters. We got to the first hole and he let me go first. Since I’m a little rusty, it took me a couple more shots than what par was, but I didn’t care. Travis was almost as bad as I was. As we got further along the putt-putt course, we eventually got better at the game. We would crack jokes and laugh with each other. I felt extremely comfortable with Travis and I could tell that he felt the same way with me.
After we finished the last hole of the course, we took our putters and dropped them off. “Are you hungry?” Travis asked just before my stomach growled. “I will take that as a yes” he said laughing. “Come on let’s go. I know the perfect place.” After about fifteen minutes we pulled up in front of a cute little café.
Once inside, we quickly found a booth and sat down. The waitress came and took our order, then headed to grab our drinks. “I had a lot of fun tonight. My dad and I would play putt-putt all the time when I was a kid,” I said. “We used to have a lot of fun together.”
Travis smiled. “I used to do all kinds of things with my dad too. We would go fishing, play football, and we would even work on cars together.” He sighed. “I haven’t seen him in almost a year, and I miss him.”
“I miss my dad too. My mom passed away from cancer when I was ten. My dad never remarried, and it’s just been the two of us ever since.”
“My parents divorced when I was sixteen. She left my dad for another man and I haven’t heard from her. No phone calls, no letters, nothing.” He twirled his straw around in his glass.
“I’m sorry.” I didn’t know what else to say, so I took his hand and squeezed it. He looked up at me with those beautiful eyes and smiled.
“Hey, it’s ok. I realized after a couple of years that I didn’t need her. My dad was all I needed.”
The waitress brought us our food. I was about to take a bite of a French fry when a familiar voice that I had hoped I would never have to hear again interrupted.
“Kenzie, nice to see you.” Easton said with a scowl on his face.
Fuck.
