Chapter 18: PromiseJANINA LAY ON THE front stairs. Devante picked her up. Her body was a cold, dead weight in his arms. Her limbs were as limp as the stems of wilted flowers. He held her close to him. He tried not to cry, but couldn’t stop his tears from falling into her hair. He looked at her face again, and realized he was holding Monica, not Janina. Why was this happening again? He screamed and screamed, and the sound of his own voice woke him up. There was light coming from outside. He could see the hallway through the window in his door.
