Next, some things that should be pretty obvious: A Bitter Pill to Swallow is a work of fiction and I am not a mental health professional. Though I did a great deal of research, I deliberately limited myself to books that were published before and during the time period in which the story is set. So some of the story’s contents are outdated. New discoveries have been made since the 90s, and I am certainly not an expert. In fact, when I was on Jeopardy! the final question was about a new blood test that detects depression, and I got it wrong because at that time I had been so focused on my research that the headline I’d read about the new test barely registered
