Chapter 7 Xander's muscles ached as he hauled another crate into the storeroom. His job as a bouncer was turning out to be more physically demanding than he had anticipated. The night was still young, but he couldn't shake off the thoughts of the mysterious woman he had encountered. Her image lingered in his mind, distracting him from his duties. He sighed, wiping the sweat from his brow, and forced himself to focus. Meanwhile, in town, Xavier was deep in thought. The murder of Chief Jones had left him unsettled. He knew there was more to the case than met the eye, and his suspicion of Lord Cornelius only grew stronger. Xavier needed proof, something tangible that would expose Cornelius for who he truly was. He leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling, trying to piece together the puzzle in his mind. Suddenly, his phone buzzed, pulling him out of his reverie. It was an unknown number. He hesitated for a moment before answering. "Detective Vesther," he said, his voice steady. "Detective, it's Claire. We need to talk. Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th Avenue. It's urgent." Xavier's heart skipped a beat. Claire was a trusted informant, but she never called him directly. Something was definitely wrong. He grabbed his coat and hat, ready to leave, but not before glancing at the clock. It was nearly midnight. Back at the bar, Xander notices a commotion near the entrance. The same woman from earlier had returned, this time without her bodyguards. She looked around nervously, her eyes scanning the crowd until they landed on him. She walked straight to him, her expression a mix of urgency and fear. "I need your help," she whispered, her voice trembling. "There's something you need to know about Lord Cornelius." Xander's interest was piqued. He nodded, signaling her to follow him outside where they could talk in private. Once they were out of earshot from the bustling bar, she took a deep breath and began to speak. "My name is Isabella. I'm Lord Cornelius' assistant, or at least I was. He's not who he claims to be. He's... dangerous. I've seen things, terrible things. And I think he's the one behind Chief Jones' murder." Xander's eyes widened. "Why are you telling me this?" "Because you're not like the others. I can sense it. You have strength, a... power. We need to stop him before more people get hurt." Before Xander could respond, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Xavier: "Urgent. Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th Avenue. Now." Xander's jaw clenched. He looked at Isabella. "You need to come with me. My brother is on to something, and we might be able to help each other." The ride to the warehouse was tense. Isabella filled Xander in on the details of Cornelius' operations, his secret dealings, and the potential link to the werewolf community. Xander listened intently, realizing that their paths were converging in a way he hadn't anticipated. As they approached the warehouse, Xander could see Xavier's SUV parked outside. He parked his car and led Isabella inside. The place was dimly lit, shadows dancing on the walls, creating an eerie atmosphere. They found Xavier standing near a table, examining a set of documents. "Xander, you made it," Xavier said, glancing at Isabella with curiosity. "Who's this?" "This is Isabella. She used to work for Cornelius. She has information that might help us." Xavier nodded, motioning for them to sit. "I've uncovered something too. Cornelius is planning something big, something that involves the werewolf community. I don't have all the details yet, but it's dangerous." Isabella spoke up, her voice steady despite the fear in her eyes. "He's been experimenting with werewolf DNA, trying to create an army of super-soldiers. Chief Jones found out and threatened to expose him. That's why he was killed." Xander and Xavier exchanged a look. This was bigger than they had imagined. They needed to act fast, but they also needed more evidence. Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed through the warehouse. The three of them tensed, ready for a confrontation. Out of the shadows emerged a group of men, armed and dangerous. At their head was a figure they recognized immediately—Lord Cornelius. "Well, well, well," Cornelius said, a sinister smile playing on his lips. "What do we have here? A family reunion?" Xander and Xavier stood protectively in front of Isabella, their instincts kicking in. Cornelius' men closed in, weapons drawn. "You should have stayed out of this, Detective," Cornelius sneered. "And you, Xander, always the rebellious one. It's a shame you chose the wrong side." Xavier's eyes narrowed. "You're going to pay for what you've done, Cornelius." Cornelius laughed. "I don't think so. You see, I've been preparing for this moment. My men are loyal, and they are more than capable of handling a couple of meddling brothers." As the tension reached its peak, Xander felt a familiar sensation. His muscles tensed, his senses heightened. He glanced at Xavier, who nodded, understanding what needed to be done. In a flash, Xander and Xavier transformed, their bodies shifting into their powerful werewolf forms. Cornelius' men hesitated, fear flickering in their eyes. "Now," Xander growled, his voice deep and menacing. The battle was intense. Xander and Xavier fought with a ferocity that left Cornelius' men overwhelmed. Isabella stayed back, watching in awe as the brothers took down one adversary after another. But Cornelius was no ordinary opponent. He watched the fight unfold, a smug expression on his face. Just when it seemed like the brothers had the upper hand, Cornelius pulled out a silver dagger, its blade glinting ominously in the dim light. He lunged at Xavier, aiming for his heart. Xander saw the attack coming and leaped, knocking his brother out of the way. The dagger plunged into Xander's side, causing him to howl in pain. "Xander!" Xavier yelled, fury igniting within him. He turned to Cornelius, his eyes glowing with a murderous intent. But Cornelius was already retreating, signaling his remaining men to cover his escape. "This isn't over," he taunted. "I'll be back, and next time, you won't be so lucky." Xavier wanted to chase after him, but Xander's condition was dire. The silver was poisoning his system, weakening him rapidly. Isabella rushed to his side, her face pale with worry. "We need to get him out of here," she said urgently. "I know someone who can help. A healer." Xavier nodded, lifting his brother carefully. They made their way out of the warehouse, leaving behind the chaos and destruction. As they drove away, Xavier's mind raced. Cornelius had escaped, but they had more information now. They knew what they were up against. "Hang in there, Xander," he muttered, glancing at his brother's pained expression. "We'll get through this. Together." As they sped towards the unknown, their fate hung in the balance. The brothers were united in their fight, but the challenges ahead were greater than they had ever imagined. And somewhere in the shadows, Cornelius was already planning his next move.
