The world thought Whitcomb dead, which meant the demon needed a new identity. It would have been much easier to reinvent yourself back then — no computerized databases that tracked you from birth to death. He could have paid someone to create a fake birth certificate, used that to get a driver’s license and anything else he needed. If he traveled frequently enough, no one would have noticed that “Henry Waters” hadn’t aged a day in the past ten years.
