Chapter 2 "Earth to Diamond," I heard a voice sing as a pair of fingers entered my line of vision and snapped, "you've been gone for some time now," she giggled as I shook myself out of my thoughts. "Oh, sorry," I smiled at her and she waved her hand nonchalantly, dismissing my apology, "were you saying something, Janice?" I asked her and she nodded her head. "I was, but leave that. It was really boring anyways, so no wonder you zoned out," she shrugged and I felt a prick of guilt immediately. Janice was the first friend I had made since I moving to New Cresthill. Everyone else had been a bit distant and stand-offish when they met me. Even something as simply as going to the supermarket became something I began to dread. Janice and I had met randomly at a café where I was getting my morning tea and she was in line behind me. Our first interaction began because of her accident prone self. She ended up bumping into me and spilling her iced tea all over my designer blouse and ruining my Ralph Lauren suit pants. I wanted to bite her head off because of it, but she seemed embarrassed enough and promised to replace my suit. I, of course, didn't let her, but we kept in touch and today is one of those rare special days we finally get to hang out. Between me teaching Mathematics at the private school in New Cresthill and her studying nursing at the local varsity, we were both pretty busy so there was no time to meet up. I thoroughly enjoyed her company and so when she called me up today begging to go out to a nice restaurant, I jumped at the chance and got ready for the evening. It'd been some time since I'd gotten the chance to just relax and be in the company of another, so I made sure I was dressed for the occasion. Dolled in a Chanel tweed mid length cocktail dress paired with the black high heels that I'd bought at the local store, I was ready for whatever the night brought in. "I really am sorry. My mind's all over the place because of the upcoming exams," I tried to explain to her as I acted like that was really what was plaguing my mind. When in reality I was trying to ignore the itchy feeling that came about due to my dislike for her tiny car. "Oh you're such an open book," she snorted, "don't act like you're not thinking about why we couldn't have taken your fancy car instead." "Ok, guilty as charged, but it's true. We could've taken my car, Janice. Everybody loves a Mercedes Benz Maybach," I pointed out and she nodded her head. "That's very true, Diamond. Though if your intentions are to fit in here, you’ll have to dial it down a tad bit. Now, I know you're a bit of a fashionista and a rich uptight girl-" "Hey!" "But the people in New Cresthill are humble beings who don't really have much. Your wealth is rubbing everyone off the wrong way." I frowned, "well that's not fair. I've been very open to making friends, but no one wants to even get just metres from me." She hummed, "well, I can't say that your wealth is the only reason..." She trailed off before she turned left into a bustling street that led to a massive area filled with all kinds of stores. "Oh," I sighed, "I get it now. It's because I'm black isn't it? This town is racist." She choked, "no, that's not it at all!" She quickly defended as she parked her car and turned in my direction. I tilted my head and raised a suspicious eyebrow, daring her to challenge me. "You're...just different from us-" "...wow..." She blushed, "ok that was so much worse. It's...hey, we're here," she said all too enthusiastically and rushed to open her car door and I rolled my eyes. "So is this like the uh ..." I trailed off. "This is the fanciest restaurant we have in New Cresthill," she beamed in my direction. I looked up at the sign that read Monsiér in big fancy lettering. I’ll admit, it didn’t look too shabby... but what on earth did that even mean?! My eyes widened at all the noise we were met with as soon as we entered. It was quite a lively place for a supposed high class restaurant. Nothing like The Clove Club back home that’s for sure. My thoughts were cut short at the sound of Janice’s laughter booming next to me. I turned in her direction to see her speaking, well more like flirting, with the waiter who I guess was supposed to lead us to our table. I ignored their whispers and turned to look around the place. The interior decorations were definitely due for a major upgrade and that too soon. Although the atmosphere was meant to be friendly, I couldn’t help but feel like an outcast. That wouldn’t be the first time I’d gotten that feeling since coming to this town. It was as if the entire town was one big happy family and I happened to come in like some sort of villain ready to tear it all up. Well, at least that was the vibes I got from almost everyone I’ve come across. "Diamond?" Janice called out. I was once again brought out of my thoughts just to see Janice seated at a table on the far right, whereas I was just standing at the counter like a lost cause. I quickly made my way to her, trying to keep my embarrassment under the wraps. I took a seat opposite from her and gave her a tight smile. "Oh, Diamond. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. No one even noticed so don’t you worry," she let out an airy laugh with a swipe of her hand. "It doesn’t matter if anyone else noticed," I muttered with a short laugh. "Come on, let’s choose something to eat. I’m famished," and at that moment her stomach let out a little growl. I giggled in return and picked up the menu. It was very thin, not much a variety I guess. I skimmed through the options and lifted my head to ask Janice for her opinion when I noticed she had gone stiff and was staring at something behind me. I turned suspiciously, just to find that there was nothing. It was then when I noticed how quiet the whole restaurant had gone. It was as if someone had flipped a switch. Everyone sat stiff in their seats. It looked as if everyone was holding their breaths. "What's-" I was cut off by the sound of the entrance doors slamming open. My head whipped in that direction and I was met with the most exquisite sight. A tall and oh, so handsome man walked in, with an entourage trailing behind him, but my eyes just couldn't look past his form. His dark brown eyes were surrounded by thick lashes and furrowed brows. Said brown eyes grazed around the room, like a predator looking for its prey. His eyes stopped on my frozen form and at that moment it was as if I had forgotten how to breathe. It felt as if he was looking right through me. His eyes narrowed as he took me in. The only thing I could do was sit and stare back into his deep eyes. He stepped in and I felt an immediate tingle running up my spine. I couldn't help but let out a shiver as he continued to walk towards his seat, I presume. The minute he took a seat at the booth in the far left of the room it was as if everyone had snapped out of their trance, except me. His eyes held mines even as his companions tried to get his attention. After a few more moments, he finally decided to give his attention to the people seated with him. A deep breath of relief left my lips as soon as he looked away. I quickly turned away and tried my best to concentrate on something else, preferably the menu in front of me. Even after he looked away, I could still feel the slight tingles running through my body. What is happening to me...
