It was very much strange to receive a phone call from someone I don't know very well, Mrs Charlesworth, or as she insisted I call her, Evangeline Charlesworth. What was even stranger was that she invited me for an afternoon, giving me the reasoning that she wanted to get to know me better.
I would've said no if things between Arthur and myself weren't going as well as they are going right now. Him and I have been going out a lot lately, ending our nights with more than a few pecks and we're on the phone with each other every night.
Things were starting to work out for me in New Cresthill, not only did I get a promotion at work, but I've made a few new friends and I'm starting to fit in. I went from a maths teacher to the Head of Department in mathematics and I'm more than happy of my achievements.
It wouldn't do me any good for me to deny the invitation of friendship from Mrs Charlesworth who's kind of like the queen of this town. If she's going to accept me, I can live life a whole lot easier this side.
"I've heard that you come from an extremely wealthy family, Diamond," she began as she flipped her hair over her shoulder, the diamonds on her nails shimmering from the sun hitting them, as a small smirk graced her features, "that does make me feel a whole lot better."
"It does?" I asked her, wondering what her reasoning could be.
She simply tilted her head, "what do you think about my son, Arthur? I see you two have gotten rather close since you've moved here. I have to say," she paused, laying her hands delicately on the table, reminding me so much of my mother and her ladylike manners, "I've never seen him this happy."
I blushed at the statement, "well, I'm glad to hear that," I replied, racking my brain for better responses but none came out and I was left looking like an i***t.
I kept giving her one word answers and blushed every now and then, and I know I'm probably getting on her last nerve. But I couldn't help it, I felt uncomfortable. Something about her, even though she laughed and smiled and looked like the kind who couldn't hurt a fly, something in those eyes of hers and the few smirks she threw my way, say something else.
"You remind me of myself, Diamond," she drawled out as she leaned back in her chair and twirled her hair around her finger, "you're capable of so much more..."
"So much more...?" I asked, confusion thick in my question.
"Well, you are dating the only Charlesworth that's left to rule."
I paused, "rule? Oh, rule, New Cresthill?" I asked her even though I was sure that's what she meant. Which I found very weird because this town, though may be large, was not a country. You can't rule a town, or can you?
"What do you think about New Cresthill?"
"It's a breath of fresh air from the fast paced life in London. It's like I'm in a whole other world," as strange as this world may seem.
"Have you ever seen yourself as a princess...as a queen?" She paused as she leaned forward now, her happy smile slowly falling down to reveal a smirk, "have you ever seen yourself as a ruler? Have you ever wished for someone to kiss the ground that you walk on, for people to be willing to die for you," she raised a finger, her smirk growing a bit sinister, "for people to...kill for you? Have you ever, Diamond?" She finished off in a whisper.
I blinked in response, stunned by her behaviour and her words. Nothing could've prepared me for those words of hers and the glint in her eyes as she picked up the expensive champagne bottle and poured it into her glass before she filled it to the very brim.
"I'm not here to scare you, don't be afraid of me. I'm a lovely woman," the smile grew back on her face and she seemed to be the woman I'd met that very first night, "I love, I give, I'm happy, I'm willing to help wherever I can and I take care of business. In many ways I'm like every other woman out there, but also, in many ways, I'm not. Mark my words, Diamond, and remember them. Arthur's going to change your life, and very, very soon, you will be just like me."
I let out a breath, shaking my head and then furrowing my eyebrows as I looked at her, "I think you've had a bit much to drink, Evangeline. Perhaps you should rest a bit, and I should take leave. I hate to cut this short."
She held up her hand, stopping me from continuing, "you make my son very happy, Diamond. Thank you for that," she changed the topic, being completely relaxed, "I can't wait for us to be a family."
I tried to stop my scoff but it came through, "I wouldn't count on that," I said to her even though deep down I wanted that to happen.
It's crazy isn't it? I haven't known the man for more than two months and here I am wishing we'd get married. I couldn't help myself though, I've always been the type to get carried away very easily.
