The first light of dawn painted the horizon in soft shades of gold and crimson.
The forest was still waking.
Morning dew clung to the leaves, while a cool breeze carried the familiar scent of pine through Dorothy's training grounds.
For the last time...
Echo stood beneath the ancient oak.
The weathered wooden training posts surrounded him like silent witnesses.
He walked toward the first post.
The deep scratches from his countless sword swings still covered its surface.
He smiled.
"...I missed more than I hit."
A voice answered behind him.
"You certainly did."
Echo turned.
Dorothy stood quietly, a small travel bag resting on her shoulder.
"I heard that."
"I wanted you to."
Echo laughed.
For a moment...
Neither of them spoke.
Instead, they simply looked around the clearing.
The stream.
The old cabin.
The giant oak.
The training field.
It had become more than a place to train.
It had become home.
Dorothy finally broke the silence.
"A mage should never become attached to a single place."
Echo lowered his eyes.
"...Because we'll have to leave?"
Dorothy nodded.
"But..."
She smiled gently.
"...That doesn't mean you shouldn't cherish the places that shaped you."
Echo took one last look.
"...I'll come back."
Dorothy's smile widened.
"I hope so."
---
Near the cabin...
Mira carefully watered the small medicinal garden she had helped Dorothy cultivate.
Tiny white flowers gently swayed beneath the morning breeze.
She knelt beside one fragile plant.
"I'll miss these."
Dorothy walked over quietly.
"They'll still be here."
Mira looked up.
"...What if they don't bloom without us?"
Dorothy chuckled.
"They've survived much longer than we have."
She gently placed a hand on Mira's shoulder.
"Nature teaches the same lesson as life."
"People leave."
"Seasons change."
"But growth..."
"...never truly stops."
Mira carefully memorised every word.
---
Not far away...
Kodie quietly inspected the supplies loaded onto the horses.
Rope.
Medicine.
Food.
Water.
Blankets.
He checked every knot twice.
Echo walked over.
"...You really don't trust anyone else's packing, do you?"
Kodie answered without looking up.
"I trust preparation."
Echo smiled.
"...Fair enough."
Edric approached, leading two additional horses.
"I expected nothing less."
Echo looked toward him.
"So..."
"...are you really a noble?"
Edric looked surprised.
"Did I never tell you?"
Echo stared.
"...You definitely forgot that part."
Edric laughed.
"I suppose I did."
"My family oversees one of the kingdom's largest potion guilds."
Echo blinked.
"I thought you were just..."
"...Edric."
"I still am."
Echo thought for a moment.
"...That's actually a relief."
---
Once everything was prepared...
Dorothy looked at her three students.
"Ready?"
Three determined nods answered her.
Without another word...
The small group stepped beyond the old wooden gate.
Echo instinctively looked back.
The gate slowly disappeared behind the trees.
He smiled quietly.
"...Goodbye."
---
The road stretched endlessly before them.
Unlike the quiet forest paths they knew...
This road was wide enough for merchant wagons.
Stone markers stood every few kilometres.
Travellers passed in both directions.
Some carried supplies.
Others travelled with families.
Echo watched everything with endless curiosity.
"...There are so many people."
Edric smiled.
"This is one of the quieter roads."
Echo stopped walking.
"...Quieter?"
Kodie quietly walked past him.
"You'll see."
---
Hours later...
The forest gradually opened into rolling fields.
Golden wheat danced beneath the wind.
Large windmills slowly turned in the distance.
Farmers worked together beneath the afternoon sun.
Echo stared in amazement.
"I've never seen fields this big."
Mira smiled.
"They're beautiful."
Edric nodded.
"This region supplies grain to three neighbouring cities."
Echo looked around again.
"...The world really is bigger than I imagined."
Dorothy quietly glanced toward him.
"And you've only seen the beginning."
---
As the afternoon passed...
The road grew busier.
Large merchant caravans rolled past.
Children waved excitedly from wagon windows.
Travelling musicians filled the air with cheerful melodies.
One elderly man played a strange string instrument Echo had never seen before.
He stopped walking.
"...What's that?"
Edric smiled.
"A lyren."
"It came from the western kingdoms."
Echo listened carefully.
The instrument produced a clear...
Gentle...
Almost magical sound.
Without realising it...
He quietly hummed the melody.
Dorothy noticed.
She didn't interrupt.
Instead...
She simply smiled to herself.
---
Near sunset...
The group reached the top of a grassy hill.
Edric stopped his horse.
"We're here."
Echo looked ahead.
His breath caught.
Far beyond the valley...
A magnificent city stretched across the landscape.
Towering white walls surrounded countless buildings.
Dozens of magical spires reached toward the sky.
Colourful banners fluttered proudly from every tower.
Even from this distance...
The streets looked alive.
Mages soared through the air on enchanted platforms.
Merchant airships slowly descended toward enormous docks.
Bridges connected towers that seemed impossibly tall.
Echo could barely speak.
"...It's..."
"...beautiful."
Mira smiled.
"I've never imagined anything like this."
Even Kodie looked genuinely impressed.
Edric pointed toward the tallest tower.
"Welcome..."
"...to Astraea."
"The heart of magical knowledge."
Echo's eyes sparkled with excitement.
Before anyone could continue...
A loud explosion of colourful lights burst high above the city.
Golden sparks filled the evening sky.
Another followed.
Then another.
Edric laughed.
"The festival has already begun."
Echo looked like an excited child.
"...Can we go now?"
Dorothy laughed softly.
"Patience."
"The city isn't going anywhere."
Echo sighed dramatically.
"...I already love this place."
As the group continued down the hill...
None of them noticed a hooded traveller watching from the roadside.
The traveller's eyes followed Echo for only a brief moment.
Then...
A quiet smile appeared beneath the hood.
"...So..."
"...you've finally arrived."
The wind carried the whisper away.
Far ahead...
The lights of Astraea shone brighter than the stars themselves.
For Echo...
The real journey...
Had only just begun.
