He started up the car; reversed; made a "U" turn. He drove back past the little village to the cross-roads where he'd seen the telephone box. He went in; looked in the directory; called the Rambling House. A voice with a Devonshire accent answered. Kiernan said: "Good afternoon. My name's Grant. Is Mr. Kospovic in?" The voice said: "No, Mr. Grant. He's out. He always goes for a walk in the afternoon." "I see," said Kiernan. "I suppose you don't know what time he'll be back." The voice said it didn't know. It went on: "But I can tell you where you will find him. He always walks along the path that leads from our back garden across the meadows and into the wood about a mile away. If you're anywhere near the main road and you keep straight on you'll come to the wood. It's not very large.
