CHAPTER 3
Sophia stood outside her house where she lived with her grandmother and brother, not sure if she should tell her grandmother how she has become a jobless lady in the twinkle of an eye
She had lost her parents at the age of nine to a very terrible accident. Her brother was just few months old back. After the death of her parents, her grandmother decided to raise Sophia and Daniel. But now grandma couldn't really do much as she has gotten very old. Sophia had all the responsibilities now
Thinking about all these really broke her because she doesn't know what to do now that she is now without a job. She just stared at her house from a distance not sure if she can face her grandmother now.
"Hey grandma I'm home" Sophia called out as she entered the house putting up a smile as though nothing had happened
"My angel how was work today"
"Very fine granny, I am so hungry"
"Well good for you because I made your favorite"
"Spaghetti and meatballs??"
"Yes baby, go ahead and take a shower before the food gets cold"
"Alright I love you grandma" Sophia ran to her room. She tried to look as cheerful as always so that grandma will not be worried about her
The doorbell rang
"I'm coming" grandma hurried to the door
"Ooh Emma my dear how are you doing??"
"I'm fine grandma, is Sophia home yet??"
"Yes baby, she just came back, she's in her room"
"Okay grandma, I'll be right back" Emma said heading over to Sophia's room
"These young ladies" grandma shook her head
Emma had been worried since Sophia left the office. She knew Sophia very well, they have been friends since high school. She knew that Sophia was not okay at that moment even if she's acting like she is. That is why she rushed over to Sophia's house from work.
"Hey Sophia, I've been trying to reach you, you're not answering your phone"
"My phone ran out of battery" Sophia said raising her phone.
"You got me very worried about you" Emma had a slight frown on her face
"I'm sorry okay?? I didn't know"
"It's fine, so how are you??"
"I'm good, what do you mean"
"Look you can lie to everyone else but not me, baby I know you're not fine, you should admit that sometimes"
"I'm fine okay, everything is good, there's nothing wrong" Sophia said trying to take back the tears welling up in her eyes
"What did grandma say about it??"
"I've not told her yet, I don't know how to tell her" Sophia said, this time the tears poured down freely
"Hey baby it's okay I get it, but you know you have to let her know" Emma said as patted Sophia's back
"No I'm not telling her anything, I don't want her to get worried" Sophia wiped her tears
"You think that's the best thing to do here"
"Yeah it is. I can just get another job and grandma will not even know that I was fired"
"Sophia, you and I know how hard it is to get a job in this city." Emma tried convincing her best friend
"I know, I'll still give it a trial" Sophia said full of hope
"Alright if you say so"
There was a knock on the door
Emma opened up. Grandma walked in
"Are you ladies not hungry at all?? The food is getting cold" Grandma said with a slight frown on her face
"We're coming grandma"
"Is Daniel back yet??" Sophia asked
"Yes, he is studying in his room. I'll call him out to come and have dinner"
"We'll be there in a minute"
"You ladies better be" Grandma walked back to the kitchen
"Grandma gets really upset when I don't eat. Anyways, come on let's go and have dinner"
Sophia held Emma's hand as they walked to the dinning area
"Wow this looks really good" Emma said grabbing a plate
"Yes, and tastes delicious too" Sophia said
Grandma smiled
Daniel walked out of his room
"Hey sis, "hi Emma"
"Yo what's up??" Emma said smiling
"Good " Daniel smiled back
"Hey is that anyway to greet your big sis??" "Hey sis" Sophia said mimicking him
"So am I supposed to give you a hug or something??" Daniel joked back
They all laughed.
For a moment, Sophia forgot about everything that happened that day as she sat at the table with the people she cherished the most. They laughed and made jokes about everything they talked about.
After dinner, Emma stood up to leave
"Alright I'll be heading home now, thank you for the delicious meal grandma"
"It's nothing baby, you're family to us, you're more than welcome to come anytime"
Thank you grandma
"I'll escort her out, I will be right back" Sophia said as she left with Emma
Outside the house..........
"So what are you doing tomorrow??"
"I'll start applying for jobs, and see if lick would be on my side" Sophia said hopefully
"Alright it's good"
"Thank you so much for coming to check on me tonight. It means a lot to me"
"It's nothing, what then am I here for??"
"I want you to stop crying about this alright, things will surely work out"
"Alright thank you, you are an amazing friend to me" Sophia said getting emotional again
"Hey baby stop crying" Emma gave her a warm hug
"Alright go back inside, I'm leaving now and make sure you power your phone so I won't get worried"
"Alright dear, bye"
Sophia went back into the house.
"Good night grandma" Sophia said as she walked to her room
"Sleep tight baby"
That night, Sophia could not sleep. Staring up at the ceiling, her body was at rest but her mind was not. She kept thinking about applying for jobs as soon as possible.............
The next morning,
"Hey baby, wake up, you're late for work" Grandma said trying to wake Sophia up from sleep.
"Good morning grandma. How did I sleep last night??"
"What kind of question is that?? Get up you're late for work"
Sophia froze looking at grandma wondering if she should spill the tea or not
"Oooh yes that's true. I did not hear my alarm ring" Sophia hurriedly got out of bed acting like she was preparing for work
"Well you better hurry up and have your breakfast before leaving. You're late already" Grandma left the room
Sophia sat back down on the bed with a heavy sigh. She knew grandma would suspect something if she stayed at home all day.
"What do I do now??"
She quickly showered, dressed up like she was heading to the office, went over to have breakfast before leaving.
Grandma watched Sophia as she ate feeling all relaxed and comfortable. Normally, she would hurriedly take a few bites and head out. But it was different today.
"You're eating slowly today, are you not late for work??" Grandma asked
"Oooh yes actually I'm done eating, see you later, grandma" Sophia rushed out
Sophia walked down the street with no particular destination in mind. She could not go over to Emma's place because Emma is obviously at the office right now.
Sophia walked over to a nearby park. The sky was very sunny and bright. She watched the children playing, adults going about their day to day activities, and she felt like she was the only one that was just sitting around with nothing to do.
Immediately, she grabbed her phone searching for online job applications. She searched for hours but could not find anyone convenient for her. It is either the job has a very small pay, or the distance is very far. She applied for the few she could find hoping to get a positive feedback.
Filled with shattered hope, she began heading home.
