Awakening

Damn, this girl. I think if I was a bit more ordinary I’d just nod my head and let her do whatever she wanted with me. I almost do anyway. “Uh, I’m not… I’m flattered and all… I don’t know you very well and I sympathise a lot with what you’re feeling. Actually, make that empathise all things considered. So if you’re asking me to love you out of nowhere… I uh, must decline.” I make sure to keep my voice very low but I can practically hear ears prick up and a cold snap hit the table I’m at… make up your minds you silly doting people… “Hehehe. Defiant no matter what, huh? That’s actually what I like about you. Very meek but very brave, such a contradiction is as cute as it is fascinating. Okay, I gotcha. I won’t force anything…” Despite saying that she now puts her hands on mine and intertwines our fingers. “We can just be friends first, see where it goes, and if we ever need a bit of comfort, we can just have some fun, nothing wrong with that right? Not a single downside... “  I’m not going to say I dislike her. In fact, I’m pretty sure she’s an amazing person and it’d be fun without a doubt. I also know, she probably will keep pushing for something though. I think it’s best to negotiate while I’m not mentally worn down. “Uh, sure. That sounds alright. I’m uh a bit too tired for anything today but, I think being friends is a nice start… so will you, uh, please, let me go?” Her smile grows even wider than usual.  “Nope. We’re just being good friends right now. See? Best buds just holding one another with the bonds of brother and or sisterhood. Nothing wrong about that, right?” Ah, lady. Please. She lets my hands go and then wraps her arms around my neck and rests her head by my left shoulder and whispers in my ear. “It’d give you a very good reason to ignore and drop off that clingy and deluded elf girl. Not like I have anything against her, but if that’s what you want… all we’d have to do is act lovey-dovey in front of her.” Oh. She did her research while I was out cold. Her temptation sends a wave of mischief from the top of my body to the tips of my toes and it is as chilling as it burns. I mean, I am getting quite annoyed at her constant stalking and passive-aggressive behaviour. I mean I can see it. She’ll throw a fit but leave. It’ll be an answer to this problem that’s been looming over me. Alisa knows it and that’s where this proposition comes from. It’s a way she can get what she wants while making sure I get what I want. A way to force my hand to compromise into hers. I sigh again. It seems I sigh a lot at everything, am I just that tired of everything or am I just an i***t? Just because you can fool other people doesn’t mean you’re smart. It just means you know how to play the game. My mind drifts to Olivia covered in wounds back at the orphanage. I don’t know all the details but she clearly fought with everything she had. She might have done it because deep inside she wants to be a good person, or what would be worse, would be if she did it for my… no, Zelo’s sake. If that were the case, I don’t think I could so easily shrug her off. No one forced her to do this but one way or another she decided my fight was also her fight.  It’s absurd. Am I just trying to be a hero again? I open my mouth to respond. I hate myself so f*****g much for the words I’m about to spew. “I can’t do that to her. I can’t make her leave with a lie, she’s already following me because of a lie. It doesn’t feel right to me. One way or another she got hurt fighting here today. I’m not sure what would have happened if she hadn’t been here. I can’t say I like her, like at all, really… but it’s just not the right thing to do. If you and I were really…. Together in that way, sure I don’t think asking her to stop following me around would be unreasonable but we’re not. So I have to decline, again. Even if I really want to accept.”  Alisa drags her head back to face me and pouts. “For a trickster, you’re very soft. Like a marshmallow.” Her eyes are piercing through me as if she was an x-ray machine at an airport before showing a new expression. A face filled with almost childlike wonder, “I think I like that. Makes me want to protect you. Make you mine. I like that a lot. What’s this… feeling…?” Her face suddenly flushes and she’s put on the back foot for the first time in our entire exchange. Something has awoken in her and I feel something like a ravenous hunger growing inside of her. Threatening to crush me like a tsunami against a seaside town. A wolf having cornered a rabbit and then deciding to play with her food. There’s something both sweet and sinister in her smile now. “I’ll make sure you have the time of your life. If you want to be so adorable, I’ll enable it. Consider me your patron from now on and let me say that if you need anything and I mean… anything…” She places both hands on the top of my thighs and rubs them. I gulp. “I’ll do anything.” Like a lovestruck schoolgirl. She might be more dangerous that the stalker Olivia in a ton of ways. Bright as the sun. As addictive as a drug. As deadly as poison.  A femme fatale whose embrace begs you to bury your head within.
