chapter 2

A heavy silence settled over the street. Even the cheerful chatter from the market seemed to fade into the distance. Aria glanced at her father. She had never seen him like this. His shoulders were tense, his jaw clenched, and his eyes remained fixed on the black SUV as if he already knew who was inside. "Dad?" Ava whispered. "What's going on?" Victor didn't answer. Instead, he took a step backward, shielding his wife and daughters. "Stay behind me," he repeated, his voice firmer this time. The sisters exchanged worried glances. Mia tried to laugh it off. "It's probably just someone looking for directions." No one smiled. The SUV's engine finally went silent. A click echoed through the air as the driver's door opened. A polished black shoe touched the ground. Then another. A tall elderly man, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, stepped out of the vehicle. His silver hair was neatly combed back, and he carried himself with quiet authority. Two younger men in black suits followed behind him. They stopped a few feet away from Victor's family. The older man removed his gloves slowly before looking directly at Aria. His eyes softened. "So..." he murmured. "We finally found you." Aria frowned. "I'm sorry... do I know you?" The man gave a respectful bow. "My name is Harold. I have been searching for you for eighteen years." Victor's face darkened. "Leave." Harold ignored him. His attention never left Aria. "Miss Aria Morgan..." The name struck her like a slap. "Did you just call me Morgan?" she asked. "My surname is Williams." Harold shook his head gently. "No." His voice was calm. "That is not your real name." Ava frowned. "What are you talking about?" Mia folded her arms. "I think you've mistaken us for someone else." Harold reached into the inside pocket of his coat. Instantly, Victor stepped forward. "Don't!" The two bodyguards moved closer, but Harold lifted a hand, stopping them. "I'm not here to hurt anyone." Slowly, he pulled out an old cream-colored envelope. It looked worn with age. The golden wax seal on the front had cracked over the years, but the elegant crest stamped into it was still visible. Harold held it out. "This belongs to Miss Aria." Aria stared at the envelope but didn't move. Victor's breathing became uneven. "I said leave," he growled. Harold finally looked at him. "You've protected her for eighteen years." His voice was filled with unexpected respect. "You've done well." Aria's heart skipped a beat. Protected her? "What is he talking about?" she asked, turning to her parents. Neither of them answered. Her mother's eyes were already glistening with tears. "Dad..." Ava said quietly. "Please tell us what's happening." Victor closed his eyes for a brief moment. When he opened them again, they were filled with pain. "There are things..." he began. "There are things we never wanted you girls to know." Aria felt her stomach tighten. "What things?" Harold took one careful step forward. "Miss Aria, eighteen years ago, your parents—" "Enough!" Victor shouted. His voice echoed across the street. People nearby stopped walking and turned to look. "You've said enough." For a long moment, no one spoke. The wind picked up, carrying the scent of approaching rain. Harold let out a weary sigh. "I had hoped today would be different." He nodded toward one of the men behind him. The bodyguard stepped forward and carefully placed the envelope on the ground before backing away. "No one is forcing you to come with us," Harold said softly. "But the truth has waited long enough." He looked at Aria one last time. "When you're ready... open the envelope." Without another word, Harold turned and walked back toward the SUV. The bodyguards followed. The engine roared to life. Within seconds, the vehicle disappeared down the road. No one moved. No one spoke. Only the old envelope remained, lying on the wet pavement between Aria and the family she had trusted her entire life. With trembling hands, she took one hesitant step toward it. Behind her, Victor whispered a sentence that made her blood run cold. "I'm sorry... I should have told you the truth years ago."
