Chapter 2:

MIRA The border of the North Ridge Pack wasn't just a line on a map; it was a wall of invisible energy. When I crossed it, the last frayed threads of my connection to the pack land snapped. The agony was so sudden I fell to my knees in the dirt, vomiting bile. It wasn't just the rejection anymore. Whatever had been used to drug me the night before was still clawing through my veins, a slow-acting poison that Kael hadn't bothered to notice. My vision blurred, the towering pines of the neutral territory spinning like dark, jagged teeth against the gray sky. I tried to crawl. Just a little further, I told myself, my fingernails caked with mud. If I die on his lands, he wins. If I die here, I’m free. But my strength was gone. The world began to fade into a cold, suffocating grey. I lay my head on a bed of damp moss, the scent of rot and winter filling my lungs. My heart, already shattered by Kael's words, began to slow its rhythm. So this is how the Luna of North Ridge ends, I thought bitterly. In the dirt. Alone. Then, the air changed. The forest grew unnaturally still. The birds stopped chirping; the wind died down to a breathless hush. Through the haze of my fading consciousness, a new scent pierced the fog. It wasn't the sandalwood of Kael or the generic pine of the North. It was something primal—the smell of a coming storm, of crushed dark chocolate, and the sharp, metallic tang of ancient power. A heavy, rhythmic thud echoed through the ground. Footsteps. I tried to lift my head, but my neck felt like it was made of glass. A shadow fell over me, tall and broad enough to eclipse the sun. "What do we have here?" The voice was a low, melodic growl. It vibrated in my chest, strangely soothing the ache of the rejection bond. A pair of polished black boots appeared in my line of sight. Then, the man knelt. I felt a hand—large, calloused, and radiating a terrifying amount of heat—press against the side of my neck. "A female," another voice said, more distant and professional. "She's been rejected, Alpha. The bond-wound is fresh. And... she's been poisoned. Silver-root, by the smell of it." "She’s a Luna," the first voice—the Alpha—replied. I felt his fingers slide to my chin, tilting my face upward. I forced my eyes open. I was staring into eyes the color of molten gold, rimmed with a ring of midnight blue. He was breathtakingly beautiful in a way that felt dangerous—his jawline was sharp enough to cut, his hair as dark as a raven’s wing. This wasn't just an Alpha. This was a predator who sat at the top of the food chain. Alpha Aurelian. The "Black Lion" of the South. The man Kael used to whisper about with fear in his eyes. "Kael's little bird," Aurelian murmured, his eyes scanning my face with an intensity that made my skin prickle. "He threw away a diamond and called it a stone." "She's dying, Sire," the other man warned. "We should leave her. The North Ridge will claim we kidnapped her if she expires in our care." Aurelian’s grip on my chin tightened, not enough to hurt, but enough to claim. His gaze locked onto mine, and for a split second, I felt a spark—a tiny, electric jolt that defied every law of nature. My wolf, which had been whimpering in the corner of my mind, suddenly let out a low, curious chuff. "No," Aurelian said, his voice dropping into a register that commanded the very shadows to still. "He didn't just throw her away. He left her for me to find." He reached down, sliding one arm under my knees and the other behind my back. He lifted me as if I weighed nothing, pulling my shivering body against the solid, burning warmth of his chest. "Let the North Ridge come for her," he hissed, his amber eyes glowing with a sudden, feral heat. "I’ve been looking for a reason to burn that pack to the ground. Now, I have the perfect spark." As he turned and began to walk, the darkness finally claimed me. But for the first time in three years, I didn't feel like I was falling. I felt like I was being hunted. And strangely, I wasn't afraid.
