Chapter Ten Finally I awoke to the sound of Miss Eva’s feet padding across the kitchen floor. I reasoned it must be morning. After a while I could smell bacon cooking; the odour made me nearly mad with hunger. I heard the door of my cage open and I was pulled out by the collar, and led across the room into the toilet, then taken back out into the kitchen and pushed to my knees. I heard the sound of a chair scraping as Miss Eva sat down beside me. Then she took my head in her hands and laid it in her lap. I was overcome by this first show of tenderness. I began to cry. I heard the sound of Miss Eva eating. Fervently I hoped that I might get some of the bacon. But instead Miss Eva pushed a morsel of dried toast into my mouth.
