Miss Eva loved to keep me off-balance. She didn’t like things to be predictable, and didn’t want me to get complacent. Sometimes she caught me completely by surprise. One afternoon I was round at her place. We’d just had lunch and were drinking coffee in her sitting room, each of us reading a book and exchanging words now and again. Suddenly she said, “Lie down on the floor, on your back.” Of course I did as she said, without hesitation. “Now raise your skirt, right up to your waist, and take your knickers off.” I was wearing a sort of schoolgirl skirt, pleated, rather short. I pulled it up, then eased myself out of my white cotton knickers. “Bend your knees,” Eva said, “and spread your legs.” I did as she said. “Wider,” she said. I spread them as wide as I could.
