  “I hope you don't mind,” James said to Cynthia as they took the elevator. He pressed the button for the top floor. “I thought I should bring you away to defuse the situation.”   “It's okay,” she told him. “Great idea. Thank you.”   He looked at her with a warm smile. “You're welcome.”   The elevator opened into the vestibule of the penthouse. James opened the door and led her into an ultramodern apartment.   “You can hang out here for a few minutes,” he told her. “I'll change into a new shirt.”   “What about the stain?”   “Don't worry about it, my housekeeper will take care of it.”   Cynthia shook her head. “I'm afraid that'll be too late.
