A Dangerous Dance

The dress was stunning. Too stunning. Eva stared at herself in the mirror, heart thudding as she smoothed the dark emerald fabric down her waist. It hugged her curves like a secret, every inch of it whispering elegance and danger. The slit ran scandalously high on her left thigh, and the neckline dipped just enough to test her courage. Andre had it sent to her suite that morning with a simple note: Wear this. Be ready by eight. No “please.” No explanation. Now, as the car pulled up to the glowing entrance of the Lancaster Hotel, Eva’s fingers trembled around her clutch. Cameras flashed like lightning outside the tinted windows. Andre sat beside her, all sculpted restraint in a tailored black tux. He hadn’t said a word since they left the penthouse. His jaw was tense. His eyes unreadable. “This gala,” Eva asked carefully, “what is it exactly?” “A fundraiser for my father’s foundation,” he replied, eyes still forward. “Every business elite in the city will be there.” “And I’m your... wife for the evening?” “You’re my wife. Period.” Something in the way he said it made her chest tighten. Andre stepped out first. The crowd outside roared as cameras turned their way. He didn’t offer his hand. He simply stood there, waiting for her like he expected obedience. Eva swallowed hard and stepped out into the noise. Flashes exploded. Reporters shouted their names. Eva smiled, but it felt forced — a mask she wasn’t used to wearing. Andre offered his arm. She took it. Together, they walked into the fire. --- The ballroom was gold and glass and filled with sharks in glittering gowns. Eva felt a thousand eyes on her as she entered. Some curious. Some amused. Others calculating. The air buzzed with power and secrets, and Eva knew she was the outsider wearing a borrowed crown. Andre guided her through the room like he was born to own it. His presence was magnetic — people parted for him, gravitated toward him, feared him. Eva played her part: smiled softly, nodded politely, held his arm like she belonged. But inside, she was suffocating. “Eva.” A voice called her name from across the room. She turned and was greeted by an older man in a navy suit and thick glasses. Warm smile, kind eyes. “I’m Richard, Andre’s godfather. So lovely to finally meet the woman who could tie this one down.” Eva smiled. “It’s nice to meet you too, sir.” “Call me Richard,” he said with a wink. “And just between us, I’ve never seen Andre look quite so... interested in anyone. Not even Selene.” The name punched the air out of Eva’s lungs. Her smile faltered. Andre’s fingers subtly tightened around her waist. “Excuse us, Richard,” Andre said coolly, leading her away. Eva waited until they were out of earshot before whispering, “You told him about us?” “I told him what he needed to know.” “So Selene was really—” “Not here,” Andre muttered, cutting her off. But it was too late. The name had already slipped inside her bloodstream. --- The gala dragged on. Eva smiled until her cheeks ached, danced with strangers under Andre’s careful eye, and drank champagne that didn’t quite dull the pressure in her chest. It wasn’t until the slow music started that Andre reappeared beside her. “Dance with me,” he said, offering his hand. She hesitated. “I’m tired.” “You’re my wife. People are watching.” So she let him lead her to the dance floor, let his hand settle firmly on her back, let his fingers lace with hers. They danced in silence. Close. Too close. “You look like you want to run,” Andre said quietly against her ear. “Maybe I do.” His hand pressed lower on her back. “You won’t.” “You don’t own me,” she whispered. “No,” he said, voice tight. “But I hate watching other men look at what’s mine.” Eva’s breath caught. Her eyes flew to his. Something dangerous flickered there — not just possessiveness, but conflict. Heat. Hunger. Regret. “Is that what I am to you?” she asked softly. “Property?” “No,” he said. “You’re my reminder.” “Of what?” “That even stone can burn.” The music swelled. And Eva realized with terrifying clarity: This wasn’t just a game to Andre anymore. He was losing control. And so was she.
