9: 03 AM Floor 50 Executive Office
The doors to Richard Hayes office were taller than any door Elma had ever walked through Polished dark wood with a brass handle that felt cold under her palm
Nathan stood beside her but didn’t go in He just said You’ve got this
Elma nodded and stepped inside
Richard Hayes was behind a desk that could fit her whole apartment on top of it He stood when she entered and gestured to the chair across from him
Sit Miss Okonkwo he said No formalities today
Elma sat Her hands were steady She’d rehearsed this moment in her head a hundred times
Thank you for seeing me she said
You earned it Richard replied He sat back and studied her For a long time he didn’t speak Then he said Do you know why I agreed to see you
Because I had proof Elma said
Partly Richard said But proof is useless without someone willing to use it You could have sold that email You could have leaked it to the press You could have run But you didn’t Why
Elma thought about it I want my name back she said I want to walk into a room and not feel like I have to explain why I deserve to be there
Richard nodded Slowly That’s a good answer
He slid a folder across the desk
Inside is a contract Elma read the top line Junior Executive Assistant to the Chairman Temporary 6 months with review
A promotion she said quietly
A test Richard said If you take it you’ll work directly under me You’ll see things you won’t like You’ll be in rooms where decisions are made that affect thousands of people If you fail you’ll be out If you succeed you’ll have a future here
Elma looked at the contract then at Richard What happens if I say no
You go back to floor 12 Richard said Or you leave With a recommendation letter from me Either way you walk out with your name intact
Elma closed the folder She didn’t need to open it She already knew her answer
I’ll take it she said
Richard smiled It was small but real Welcome to the other side Miss Okonkwo
He stood and extended his hand Elma shook it Firm steady
As she turned to leave Richard said One more thing
Elma stopped
Joseph has been arrested this morning Richard said Catherine is negotiating a plea deal It’s over
Elma felt something in her chest release She didn’t cry She didn’t smile She just nodded
Thank you she said
Richard nodded You earned that too

11 47 AM Floor 12
Elma walked back onto floor 12 with the folder under her arm The floor went quiet when she entered
People stared Some looked away Some looked hopeful
Linda was the first to stand
You got it Linda said She didn’t ask what it was She already knew
Elma nodded Floor 50
The room exhaled
Congratulations came from a few desks Others were silent But no one said anything cruel No one dared
Elma packed her things into a box It wasn’t much Just a photo of her parents and a chipped mug
She set the box down and looked around
This place had been her starting point Her first fight Her first proof that she could stand and not break
She wasn’t leaving it defeated She was leaving it changed
Linda walked over and hugged her
Don’t forget us up here Linda said
I won’t Elma said

1 00 PM Outside Hayes Corp
Destiny was waiting by the entrance with two coffees and a grin
You did it she said handing Elma a cup
Elma took it I did
They stood there for a moment watching people go in and out of the building
What now Destiny asked
Now I go to floor 50 Elma said And I make sure no one else has to start where I started
Destiny nodded That sounds like you
They bumped shoulders and laughed
As Elma walked away Destiny called out Hey
Elma turned
Proud of you Destiny said
Elma smiled For the first time it felt real

3 30 PM Floor 50
Elma’s new desk was by the window It was clean It was quiet It had no flickering light
Nathan stopped by with a file
First assignment he said Handing her the folder
Elma opened it Internal review of vendor contracts across all departments
You’ll hate it Nathan said
Good Elma said I like fixing things
Nathan smiled I thought you might
He left her to it
Elma sat down and opened the file
Outside the city stretched out below her No longer something she was locked out of
She was inside now
And she wasn’t going anywhere
