A Mate That was Lost

Chapter 11

Jake’s POV

I can’t believe this. I am seething. I just asked Lani to go to lunch with me but Victor interrupted and said she was going to lunch with him. The way he acted when he saw me at Lani’s door pissed me off. It’s like he was telling me that she was his.

Who does he think he is? He is on my territory and staying in my house and he has the nerve to stake a claim on my mate.

I gritted my teeth at the thought of Victor’s hands on Lani. She is mine.

I stomp my way downstairs to the dining hall and am immediately hit with the mouth watering smell of burgers. I walk into the kitchen to load my plate up with a burger and fries. I walk back into the dining room and before I can even sit down, Jenna walks up to me smiling seductively.

“Hey there Jake,” she practically purrs.

“Hi Jenna,” I said back, annoyance laced my voice.

I sit down and Jenna disappears into the kitchen only to come back and sit next to me with her burger and salad. I roll my eyes, not in the mood for her.

“Are you busy after lunch,” Jenna asks.

“Yeah,” I mumble, my mouth full of the delicious burger. “Alpha Derek and I are going to be in my office. He is gonna teach me better ways to delegate my time and how to handle being Alpha at such a young age.”

“Well I think you are already an amazing Alpha,” she muses. “I just think you need an equally amazing Luna to help you out.”

She winks at me when I look at her in shock at her comment.

“I will have an amazing Luna,” I said. “Lani will make the perfect Luna.”

“She doesn’t deserve to be Luna,” Jenna snaps and growls. “She was an Omega who was adopted. She doesn’t deserve you. I think you should just reject her and choose a Luna who deserves the title.”

“You are wrong,” someone growls behind me.

I turn to see Victor standing behind me, glaring at both of us. I look behind him for Lani only to see that she is not with him. I smile inwardly as I realize that she isn’t having lunch with him after all.

“Your Alpha doesn’t deserve her,” Victor continues, still glaring. “You guys treated like s**t while she was here. She does deserve the title Luna but your pack doesn’t deserve her as its Luna. She’s incredibly smart, beautiful, and all around amazing. Not to mention how strong she has become and how much she had to fight to become the best female warrior in our pack. It’s you who don’t deserve her.”

With that he trunks on his heel and walks away. I blink in shock because he is right. I don’t deserve her. I treated her terribly when she was here and now I am trying to make it up to her but I can never truly make up for how I treated her.

“What a load of s**t,” Jenna scoffs. “He clearly doesn’t know who she really is. She’s a b***h who came from trash. She-.”

“Enough,” I growl at her. “She’s not a b***h and she is not trash. Right now it’s you that's a b***h. You need to back off. I am not making you my Luna. Lani is my mate and she will be my Luna. Get it through your head. I don’t want you. I never wanted you. You were just someone I f****d when I was lonely. That is all you will be. You can’t have me anymore. I haven’t f****d you in over a month, in fact I have gone out of my way to not be alone with you because I. Don’t. Want. You. I don’t love you and I never will.”

Jenna looks at me with shock on her face and her eyes fill with tears. I roll my eyes and walk away from her and go upstairs to my office to start my Alpha training with Alpha Derek.

I am shocked when I walk into my office to find Lani there with Alpha Derek, Brian, and Alicia waiting for me.

“What is going on,” I asked, confused.

“It has come to my attention that Lani is your mate,” Alpha Derek saids bluntly.

“Yes, she is,” I said without hesitation. “I plan to make her my Luna but only when she is ready and only if she accepts me. I am not going to force her to be my mate.”

Lani looks at me with shock on her face and ALicia is smiling widely while Brian keeps a cool mask on her face.

“Jake,” a voice yells.

Jenna storms into my office,

“How dare you said that to me,” Jenna growls. “You can’t just-.”

She doesn’t finish because Alpha Derek is off his chair and slamming her into the door with her hand pinned above her hand.

“Mate,” Alpha Derek growls.

My eyes widen and Lani gasps in shock. Jenna is staring into Alpha Derek’s eyes with tears in hers.

“What is your name, little mate,” Alpha Derek saids softly.

“J-Jenna,” Jenna stumbles. “My name is Jenna Stone.”

“She’s my twin,” Alicia informs him.

Alpha Derek stiffens as he remembers he is in my office and surrounded by people. He quickly lets Jenna go and takes a small step back. He stands there lost in thought for a few more minutes.

“Jenna…,” Alpha Derek saids slowly.

He glances at Lani and his eyes clouds over. I look over at Lani and see her eyes are also clouded over confirming that they are mindlinking each other. When their eyes clears, Alpha Derek scowls and turns back to Jenna.

“You bullied Lani,” he saids with ice in his voice. “You are the one that pushed her down the stairs on her 16th birthday.”

Jenna is silently crying now and she nods unable to deny it. I walk over to my desk and take a seat leaning back in my chair. Alpha Derek stares at Jenna a little longer before he turns to me.

“Alpha Jake,” he said calmly, his face a stoney mask. “I believe I am going to cancel today's training. I clearly have some things to think about. I believe I would be too distracted to train you properly and I should be giving you my full attention.”

“I understand, Alpha Derek,” I said, nodding my head.

Without looking at Jenna, he turns and walks out the door letting it slam shut. Jenna flinches and now she is full on sobbing.

“Karma,” Brian said, breaking the silence.

I turn to look at my best friend and his mate. Alicia doesn’t even look sorry for her twin. She just shakes her head in disappointment.

“I told you your s**t was gonna catch up to you,” she said calmly. “You better fix things before your mate rejects you. You need to talk to him and tell him everything.”

She said that last part while glancing at me. I freeze as I realize what she is talking about. I took Jenna’s virginity and she took mine and we have been having s*x on and off for the past two years but we were never in a relationship. I look over at Lani and the look she is giving me tells me she didn’t miss a thing and that she pretty much knows what Alicia was talking about. I am going to have to tell her and explain everything in detail.

“You are right,” Jenna hiccups. “If you will excuse me.”

Jenna quickly walks out the door to go and find Alpha Derek. I look at Lani and she is watching me with her eyes narrowed. I tense up knowing that I am in trouble. Brian clears his throat grabbing my attention and my eyes snap to him.

“I believe you two have a lot to talk about,” Brian said, inching his way to the door. “Alicia and I will leave you guys so you can do just that.”

Alicia nods her head and grabs Brian's hand. They both walk to the door. Before they walk out Brian looks back at me and I look at him pleading with my eyes for him to not leave me with my pissed off mate. He smiles sheepishly and walks out with his mate and closes the door gently. I sigh in defeat and look back at Lani. She has a stoney mask on her face as she watches me with calculating eyes.

Fuck.

Lani’s POV

After the bomb that was dropped in Jake’s office about Jenna being Alpha Derek’s mate everyone has left leaving me and Jake alone his office. Alicia told Jenna to go talk to Derek and then told him to tell him everything. I didn’t miss the way she glanced at Jake when she said that and I couldn’t help but narrow my eyes.

“Why do you think she looked at Jake when Alicia told Jenna to tell Derek everything,” Diamond asks.

I am not stupid and I have a pretty good idea of what she meant.

“They slept together,” I answered bluntly.

Diamond doesn’t say anything. She snarls and tries to take over to go find Jenna. She wants to rip her to shreds. I fight her with everything I have and eventually shove her back and she growls retreating to the back of my head. I want him to explain before I let Diamond out and kill Jenna. I owe it to Derek to let Jake explain before I go after his mate. 

Jake sighs, shaking me from my thoughts about committing murder.

“I can explain,” Jake said slowly.

“Explain what,” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest. “You and Jenna slept together. There is nothing to explain.”

“Yes we slept together,” Jake said. “I took her virginity and she took mine. We have been sleeping together on and off for the last two years. I was stressed and she was there willing to help me out. It’s no secret that I slept with other girls as well but she was the only repeat. She was just there whenever I needed to scratch the itch. I never once told her I loved her. I never started a relationship with her either.”

He pauses watching my reaction. I keep my face a calm mask even though I am seething on the inside at the thought of him sleeping around and not waiting for me, his mate, like I waited.

“I should have waited for my mate,” Jake said, as if he can read my mind. “I should have waited for you but I am an Alpha and I had needs. I tried to wait but my hormones were just too much and eventually satisfying myself just wasn’t enough anymore. I never promised her anything and I thought we were on the same page and we were just having s*x. I knew she had a crush on me and I thought she would get over it over the years but sleeping with her didn’t help. I was wrong to let her think she would become my Luna instead of my mate.”

When he was done I didn’t know what to said and so I just stared at him. He sat there and watched me panic and sadness clear in his eyes. He was scared I was going to reject him. I didn’t know what I was gonna do but I wasn’t going to reject him especially since I know how hard it is for Alpha’s to keep it in their pants. Alpha Derek was also inviting different women into his bed almost every week. Maybe that would change now that he found his mate. That is, if he doesn’t reject her.

“I am not going to reject you,” I finally said. “I am also not going to hold it against you. Alpha Derek had a hard time keeping it in his pants as well.”

“Did he sleep with you,” Jake growls.

“No,” I answer honestly.

“Has Victor,” Jake snarls Victor’s name.

“No,” I take a deep breath. “I waited for my mate.”

Jake blinks in shock. He slowly smiles as he registers what I said.

“I should have tried harder,” he said. “I should have waited for you.”

“I understand,” I said. “It’s okay. It’s normal for Alpha’s to give into their hormones.”

Jake nods his head. I smile reassuringly at him letting him know that it was really okay. The room falls into silence as neither of us know what to say next.

“I hope everything works out between Alpha Derek and Jenna,” I said finally. “She may have been a b***h but I feel like Derek will be good for her and bring out her best self.”

“Maybe,” Jake said carefully.

I watch Jake carefully and decide to tell him about Vic and I’s relationship.

“Jake,” I start. “I actually have another reason to be so understanding about you and Jenna’s relationship.”

Jake tilts his head in confusion and his eyes shone with curiosity.

“Vic and I are close,” I explain. “But not like close friends. I mean like we had a sort of relationship. It was never s****l but we did have pretty heavy make-out sessions in our rooms that ended with most of our clothes off but it never went that far. I never let go as far as s*x because I wanted to wait for my mate and Vic understood. Eventually we started to think that we were mates but when I turned 18 and shifted for the first time we realized that we weren’t. We kept the same relationship and then we came here and I found out you were my mate, I kinda pulled away and Vic noticed. I told him that you and I were mates and he didn’t take it very well especially since he knows everything that happened before I joined their pack.”

When I finished, Jake was beyond pissed. He doesn’t say anything for a while and just sits there fuming. His eyes cloud over and I know he is talking to his wolf, Hades. When he eyes clear he sighs and looks a lot calmer. He is still mad but whatever his wolf said seemed to calm him a little.

“I understand,” he said through gritted teeth. “That explains how he acted today at lunch when he told me I didn’t deserve you and that the pack didn’t deserve you as their Luna.”

My eyes widened. I didn’t know that Vic had confronted him after I told him Jake and I were mates. I knew he wasn’t happy because he didn’t say anything when I told him he just turned around and stomped off. In fact I haven’t heard from him since then either. I looked for him during lunch but couldn’t find him. I ran into Derek and asked if he’d seen Vic but all Derek said was to leave him be for a while. He asked if I could join him in Jake’s office with Beta Brian and his mate and that was how we all ended up in Jake’s office.

“I’m sorry,” I murmur. “I should have told you earlier about Vic and I’s relationship.”

“It’s okay,” Jake sighs. “I should have told you about Jenna.”

I shrug my shoulders and we sit in his office for a little while longer just talking about the last two years. We get to know each other a little better and I start to realize that I am starting to fall for Jake. I still can’t forgive him for all the s**t he has pulled over the years I was here but I was willing to try.

I am about to tell Jake my decision when Brian bursts through the door with panic written all over his face.

“Alpha, we are being attacked,” Brian yells.
