Chapter One

1455 Words
Lani’s POV Great. Today was the first day of sophomore year and I am staring into my closet trying to decide what to wear. Not that it ever mattered Jake would find something wrong about whatever I wear. I sigh and put on some ripped jeans and a plain black t-shirt.  I walk into the bathroom to brush my teeth and throw my hair up into a messy ponytail. I stare at my reflection and sigh again. I am not what you call an average looking girl. I had long wavy black hair, high cheekbones, nice plump pink lips, smooth tan skin, and piercing blue eyes. I was what some guys call pretty but I wasn’t that pretty compared to the girls I go to school with. At least that is what I am told everyday by Jake and his friends. I turn away from the mirror and head back to my room to slip on my black and white converse and grab my bookbag. I head down stairs where my parents are. My mom is by the stove making breakfast and my dad is sitting at the table reading the paper. “Good morning, dear,” my mom said without turning around. “Breakfast is almost ready. Have a seat.” “Morning mom,” I said as I took my seat across from my dad. My dad looks up from his paper and smiles. “Are you ready for your first day?” he asks, still smiling. “I guess,” I said back, shrugging. My parents don’t know about all the torture I go through at school and I try and keep it that way. I don’t want them to worry about me. They already have so much to worry about especially since I am almost 16.  “Do you want to do anything special for your birthday?” my dad asks, raising an eyebrow. “No,” I said bluntly. “Are you sure?” my mom asks, placing a plate in front of me. “We can invite some of your friends over and have a little party to celebrate you gaining your wolf.” “I don’t want to make it a big deal until my 18th birthday when I can finally shift,” I lie. I don’t have any friends but I don’t want to tell my parents. I look down at the pancakes, eggs, and bacon on my plate. I pick up my fork and start eating. “Okay. If you want to wait, we can wait,” my mom sighs. I finish my breakfast and then get up to get ready to walk to school. On my walk I think about my birthday, which is next week. I can’t help but wonder what it would have been like if I did have friends and had a party. I shake my head to get rid of those thoughts. Even if I did have friends, I couldn’t have a party. My birthday is three days after Jake’s. Jake’s birthday always takes priority because he is the Alpha’s son. Yup. My tormentor is the son of the Alpha, Jake Silver. I think it is ironic that his last name is Silver especially since exposure to silver is dangerous to werewolves. As I am lost in my thoughts, I don’t even notice that I am at school until I bump into what feels like a brick wall. “Hey, watch where you're going,” the wall snaps. “I-I-I am sorry,” I stammer out. I look up into the bright green eyes that belong to Jake. Jake is 6’0” with wide shoulders, large arms, straight midnight black hair that stops just above his eyes, and bright piercing green eyes. My eyes widen and I step back. “Oh look,” Jake sneers. “It’s the adopted Omega trash.” Jake’s friends snicker at his comment. Jake’s friends include the son of the Beta, Brian Greyback, and the Gamma twins, Alicia and Jenna Stone. The only one of Jake’s friends who doesn’t tease me as bad or as much is Brian. He just looks at me with pity and occasionally laughs half heartedly to appease Jake I look down at my feet. “Nothing to say, loser?” Jenna sneers.  Jenna is always with Jake. She has a huge crush on Jake and everybody knows it, including Jake. She feeds his ego every chance she gets and he loves it. Some people think they will be mates. I shake my head and keep my eyes down. Jake snorts and turns around and heads inside with his pose right on his heels. I let out the breath I didn’t know I was holding and took a moment to just calm my racing hearts. I don’t know what I did to get on the bad side of Jake but he never misses the chance to rub the fact that I am an adopted wolf whose parents didn’t want her. The fact that I was adopted into an Omega family just makes it worse. I sigh and walk into the school. The day went on as usual with Jake and his squad poking fun at me every chance they get but it wasn’t all that often especially since I don’t have any classes with any of them because I am in some advanced classes. Just some of the perks of being really smart I guess. As the school day ended, I headed on over to the packhouse to start my job. I am working in the kitchen today helping the cooks plan the menu for Jake’s birthday party. Everyone was eager to learn the name of Jake’s wolf. Well, everyone except me. I didn’t have to work the night of the party so I was planning on staying home. As I worked on my dish sample for the Alpha and Luna to try, my mind wandered back to my birthday. I am excited to learn the name of my wolf and actually have someone to talk to other than my parents. I finish my dish and put it on the serving cart and begin the preparations for dinner. I got out the potatoes and began washing them. After about thirty minutes of washing them I go and grab the cutting board. As I am walking back to the counter to start cutting the potatoes the head cook, Maria, comes rushing in with a huge smile on her face. “Lani!” she exclaims. I look up from what I was doing. “They loved your fruit tarts,” Maria rushes out. I blink in surprise. “What?” I ask confused. Maria rolls her eyes. “Alpha and Luna loved your fruit tarts,” she explains slowly. “They want to talk to you about having them at their son’s party.” I slowly put down the cutting board I was holding and just stare at Maria. She sighs and rolls her eyes and my reaction and reaches for my hand. She pulls me out from behind the counter and pushes me out of the door and into the dining hall where the Alpha and Luna are sitting. I walk up to their table and bow my head in respect. “Alpha, Luna.” I said respectfully. “AH, you must be the girl who made the fruit tarts.” Alpha Greg said, smiling. I nod my head. “Excellent! We absolutely loved them.” Luna Penny exclaimed. “Do you think we could get about 200 of them for our son’s party on saturday?” My eyes nearly popped out of my head at the number of tarts she asked for. “I am sure I can do it with some help.” I said. “Excellent,” Alpha Greg said, clapping his hands together. “We will pay you overtime, of course.” “Thank you, Alpha.” I said. “I will make them on Friday and put them in the fridge for Saturday.” The Alpha and Luna nod enthusiastically. After talking with them for 15 minutes about what I would need in order to make them, they dismissed me and I walked back into the kitchen. I go back to the counter and continue to cut up the potatoes for Maria. After I was done Maria sent me home.
