Today is the day of my party. Only a select few were invited to my 16th birthday. My parents wanted to save the big celebration for my first shift.
I was getting ready for the party in my room. I threw on a pair of jeans and a black button up shirt. I was putting on my shoes when there was a knock at the door. Without looking up I called for whoever was on the other side of the door to enter.
“Hey, man.” Brian said as he walked in. “Are you ready for the party yet? Everyone is waiting for you in the backyard.”
“Yeah, I am ready,” I sigh.
I get up from my bed and walk out of my room shutting the door behind me. Brian and I walk down the stairs and into the backyard. I look around and spot my parents talking to Brian’s parents. I walk over to them.
“Hi Mr. and Mrs. Greyback,” I said politely to them.
Brian is an exact copy of his father but the only difference is that Brian has his mothers eyes whereas Brian's father had grey eyes.
They both nod at me and smile. They said their goodbyes to my parents and head over to Brian at the refreshment table where Brian is currently stuffing his face with the fruit tarts that my parents ordered. I watch Brian, impressed that he can actually fit two of them in his mouth while he works on the third.
“Hi, son,” my father said. “Are you ready to gain your wolf?”
“Hi, dad,” I said, turning to look at both of them. “Yeah, I am ready. I just wish you and mom didn’t have to make a big deal out of this.”
“Nonsense, child,” my mother waves me off. “The future alpha of the pack and or son is gaining his wolf tonight. Why wouldn’t we make a big deal out of it? We are all excited to learn his name.”
I don’t respond. I just smile and nod my head at my mother. We talk for a few more minutes about school until we are approached by the Gamma twins.
“Happy Birthday,” the twins said together.
“Thanks,” I said, pulling them in for a quick hug.
When I pull away, I look over and see Brian walking over to us with three tarts. He hands us each a tart and just smiles. I look at the tart and back up. Brian is just standing there waiting. I look back down at the tart. It has cut up strawberries, kiwis, and blueberries on top of a white custard inside a cookie like pastry. I shrug and take a bite. As I chew, I am shocked to find that under the custard is a layer of hard chocolate. I moan at the taste.
“Right,” Brian said, smiling smugly.
“Wow. That is so good,” I mumble while stuffing my face with the rest of the pastry.
I glance up in time to see the twins and Brian walking back to grab another and some drinks. I look around and see everyone has one of the tarts in their hands and they are all smiling. My parents walk up to me with approval.
“I see you like the treat,” my dad said. “When your mother and I first tried them, we knew they would be perfect for your party.”
I nod my head showing my approval, trying to shove the rest of the pastry in my mouth.
“I am glad we picked them,” my mother comments. “I am impressed that Lani was able to make all 200 of them.”
“Who’s Lani,” I ask, still with food in my mouth.
“Oh the adopted Omega girl,” my dad said casually. “Lani Simmons.”
I choke at what I heard. The adopted Omega girl made these. That’s probably why she wasn’t at school and in the kitchen yesterday.
“She made these,” I sputter out, still choking.
Brian walks up and claps my back. He gives me a questioning look.
“Dude, what the hell,” he asks.
“Lani Simmons,” I respond, glaring. “The Omega trash. She made the tarts.”
The lack of surprise on his face tells me that he already knew that. I narrow my eyes.
“You knew that already,” I muse. “How do you even know her name?”
“She told me yesterday when I talked to her after you scared her out of the kitchen,” he shrugs.
“You talked to her yesterday,” I gasp. “Why? She is beneath us. Why would you even want to talk to her?”
“She actually isn't,” he snaps. “She’s really nice. You would know this if you made the effort to actually get to know her. Why do you even hate her? She hasn’t done anything to you.”
“She is an Omega,” I growl. “On top of that she’s an adopted Omega. She has no lineage.”
Brian just stares at me. He shakes his head and walks away. I stare after him bewildered. What was his problem. I shake my head. I look away and see Jenna sashaying her way over to me. I let my eyes roam over her body. She smiles seductively as she catches me checking her out. I look up at her only to see movement behind her.
I freeze at who I see walking into my party.
What is she doing here?
Lani’s POV
I walk into the party. I was pissed that my parents made me come. I was more pissed because the Alpha and Luna invited them because of course they couldn’t say no. It was their way of thanking me for making all the tarts.
I sigh in frustration.
I didn’t want to be here and I made that very clear to my parents before we came. Now I am walking into a party where the guest of honor hates me. I shake my head.
I am so lost in thought that I don’t notice Brian has walked up to me. He puts his hand on my shoulder causing me to jump
“Whoa ,” He said, putting his hands up. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I did say hi when I walked up but you didn’t notice.”
“Sorry,” I mumble.
“It’s all good,” he shrugs. “What are you doing here, anyway?”
“The Alpha and Luna invited my parents and I,” I said. “Of course my parents couldn’t say no. So they dragged me along.”
“Well, I’m glad they did,” Brian smiles at me.
I smile back at him and then I see something behind his shoulder. It’s Jake and Jenna. And they are making out. I freeze. Brian notices my reaction and turns to see what I was looking at. I can see his back tense up. He trunks to look at me with a weird expression on his face.
“At least he’s having fun now,” he sighs. “Hey. Everyone loves your tarts. They are a huge hit even Jake liked them.”
I know what he’s doing. He’s trying to distract me from what I just saw. I just look at him and smile a little . He reaches up and brushes a strand of hair out of my face. I watch him carefully.
“Why are you being nice to me,” I blurt out.
I gasp and cover my mouth while my face heats up with embarrassment. He flinches
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I know this might be weird and unbelievable, but I don’t actually hate you. I never wanted to take part in the cruel jokes and pranks Jake and the twins play on you.”
I eye him suspiciously. I opened my mouth to say something but was interrupted by the Alpha. I look over to the stage and see Jake glaring at me.
“Welcome family and guests,” Alpha Greg yells. “As we get close to midnight, we want to remind you that my son Jake is going to be gaining his wolf soon. When he finally speaks to his wolf he will come up to the stage and let us all meet his wolf and learn his name.”
Everyone claps and there are excited whispers and murmurs going around. My eyes drift to where Jake is and I see that Jenna is nowhere to be seen. I feel a hand on my lower back and I look up to see Brian staring down at me smiling warmly. I stare at him and finally smile back. I look away back to the stage and I lock eyes with Jake who is glaring menacingly at me. He turns on his heel and walks onto the stage.
We all watch as his eyes cloud over, a sign that he is talking to his wolf. When his eyes become clear they are a dark emerald green. We all know it is his wolf that is present.
