Chapter 8 Time Passes, Then Ends, The Pursuit BroadensTime Passes, Then Ends, The Pursuit Broadens Every investigation taking more than a few hours, into any kind of criminal act, eventually reaches a plateau. When it happens it is usually because there is no way to do anything fruitful at the moment. Even when suspects have surfaced lulls come along. The entire investigation takes on a frustration all its own. It becomes a dead weight hanging around the neck of the investigators. Those times also have a way of creating speculation as to motive. Most, thought Jim, do not understand the police do not have as a requirement they prove motive in criminal cases. But when a case is in a dead zone those in charge often speculate about it and ask rhetorical questions never yielding answers. Jim
