New Beginning

I watched as my Octavia and my sister talked while I sat on the other side of the yard with Josh and my Brother-in-law Cole. They wanted to talk about pack business but I couldn't stay focused on it. No matter how hard I tried, my mind always roamed back to Octavia. Watching her was calming for me. She laughed and shared stories about her family and I could tell she missed them.

“Dude, come on,” Josh said next to me.

I turned to face him and his face was constricted with worry. I wanted to tell him everything would be fine, but honestly, I didn't know if it would be. My status as Alpha was in jeopardy, if by the time you turned 30 and didn't have a mate, anyone could challenge you for your title and power of your pack. I turned 30 in three days. Of course, I didn't want to be challenged. Although I would likely win, it was a sign of weakness for my pack as a whole. But if that were to happen, as long as I had Octavia by my side I wished for nothing else. She is my mate, she just doesn't know it yet.

“ Josh, we talked about this and you know what you need to do”, I spoke

“ Blake, I can't do that. You’re my Alpha. I would never challenge you” he whispered. If my pack were to be taken by someone, I wanted it to be josh. We were like-minded and wanted the same for our pack. He was just as responsible for our success as I was. He would be a good leader, and I trusted him. I had spent years teaching him and guiding him, but he had done the same for me. His father was my dad's beta, but he passed away years ago. When Josh's Father passed away, my father shed his Alpha title and passed it down to me. Josh took after his father, he was honest and loyal to a fault.

“ You can” I responded, “ And you will because I gave you an order”, I said sternly, looking at him in a way only an alpha could. I couldn't see it but I felt my eyes change color as I spoke to him.

He looked down and nodded. Truth be told, I felt bad for what I was asking him to do and I felt bad playing my alpha role against him. He was a true friend. But I knew that if he was going to do it I needed to push him, he would never intentionally do something like that to me. I had been planning for someone to take my pack for years, until I had met Octavia, then I had hoped it would work out.

My hope was fleeting, I knew that Octavia would need to know everything about me and my pack before agreeing to become my mate. Having s*x with her meant she would be my mate, and I couldn't sleep with her until she knew. I was starting to think that 3 days wasn't long enough. Therefore, I would lose my pack.

“ Let's lighten the mood shall we?” Said my brother-in-law, Cole.

“ Lets” I said

“ What’s it like finding your mate? I’ve always heard that it was different for Alpha's”, he said.

I looked over at Octavia, who I saw was also looking at me. She smiled and turned back to Kayla, laughing at whatever she was saying. I didn't care to listen in on their conversation. I took a deep breath and thought about what it was like for me. I had made the mistake of thinking Sabrina was my mate in the past. I thought I was right then, but I know how I feel about Octavia now. I don't understand how I could have ever mistaken this feeling. One day she will be an amazing Luna, even if she was my mate.

“ It's all consuming” I said. I smiled at the thought of her in my truck.

“And frustrating” I added with a laugh, knowing she wasn't wearing any underwear and hers were currently ripped and had been thrown somewhere in the truck.

Both of the men laughed as they looked towards their own mates and nodded in agreement. Cole turned back to me a few minutes later.

“ But how is it that she doesn't know? I thought even humans could tell when they had met their mate?” he continued to question me.

“ Only the Alpha knows, in any given circumstance, human or not” I said back to him.

I had thought about him long enough and didn't want to talk about it anymore. I tried to change the subject but got distracted when I heard Noah arguing with his cousins. Kayla's kids had taken one of his presents and were playing with it. While Noah was asking for it back, I heard him yelling at one of them and stood up to go talk to him. Right as I stood up I heard a loud, but winy growl come from my son as he shifted into his wolf form. His cousins followed suit and changed, all three of them wrestling each other to the ground. I started to laugh at the kids but stopped when I realized that everyone was silent.

Fuck, Octavia.

I spun around and saw her watching as the kids circled each other, with terror in her eyes. I turned to look at Cole and Josh, pointing towards the kids. They nodded and headed towards the kids and I ran to Octavia. I grabbed her hand and pulled her inside the house away from the kids.

“ Blake”, She Gasped, letting out all the air that she had been holding in.

“ What the f**k” she whispered.
