“Okay?” Jake said, sitting down heavily and gesturing at her to sit down too. Sally did not sit down, however, but rather, began to pace the room as she talked. “I was found at a park in Asheville when I was barely a day old. Of course, I don’t remember any of this.” Sally quipped and laughed a little, but it wasn’t really funny and she sobered up immediately. “Nobody knew who dropped me there or why. The only thing that was found with me was a small white blanket. I don’t know why, but I could never get rid of that blanket. I took it with me to all the foster homes I went to and even had it with me as an adult. I imagine that it was destroyed in the fire when I had the accident.” She paused and glanced over at Jake. He was looking at her, not with pity or shock, but with understanding.
