Lena’s POV: Sunlight cuts through the curtains. I blink awake to Maria pulling them open. I sit up. “Good morning.” It’s a habit. It’s always been a habit with her. She doesn’t answer. Just adjusts the fabric and moves away from the window. “Breakfast is on your nightstand,” she says to the wall. Then she’s gone. The door clicks. And the memory hits me. I sit up fast. “Maria.” She pauses at the door and doesn’t turn all the way. “Were you in here last night?” I asked. “No.” That’s all I get before she’s out. I stare at the closed door. Someone was here. I know it. I felt it. My eyes drop to the nightstand. A book. I didn’t leave that there. I reach for it. I see She Devil written in gold lettering on the cover. My favorite.
