LENA’S POV There’s a new book on the nightstand. Crime and Punishment. No highlights. No margin notes. No letter back. He took mine and gave me silence in return. “s**t, s**t, shit.” I say as I start pacing. Four steps to the window. Four steps back. Four steps to the door. Four steps back again. Did he burn it? Did he throw it in the trash? Did he read it and feel nothing? Anger I can use, I know what to do with anger. I can throw it back. Silence is different. “i***t,” I mutter to the empty room. Was the letter stupid? Maybe. Did I expect him to open the door and say we’re good? No. I’m not that delusional. Did I expect something? Yes. Even rage would’ve been a reaction. Even him tearing the pages out one by one while I listened from here. I sit on the edge
