    I didn't feel dead.      Actually, I didn't feel anything.      Numbness took over as soon as the knife entered my skull. I couldn't open my eyes, and I was surrounded by darkness. The only sense I could rely on was my hearing.      "Ash! Ash!" Abby cried. I was vaguely aware of being propped against something soft. Her voice sounded farther away. "Ash, please! Don't leave me!"      I no longer understood her words. I heard voices, one deeper than hers, but with each moment, I slipped further into the darkness.      I wasn't sure how long I stayed unconscious. It could've been a few seconds, a few minutes, a few hours, a few days . . . . At first, I didn't know.      The darkness wasn't that frightening. I didn't feel alone.
