CHAPTER 6 : A NEW BEGINNING

1142 Words
The day Aarohi Sinha had long awaited finally arrived—her first day as a doctor at the hospital. The early morning sun filtered through the tall glass windows of the hospital as she walked through the main entrance, her nerves a chaotic mixture of excitement and apprehension. With her were a few of her friends and colleagues, all fresh out of medical school, and like her, they had been assigned their first duties in the children’s ward. Aarohi’s heart leaped when she saw her posting. She had always loved children, and the thought of working with them filled her with a deep sense of purpose. She couldn’t hide her enthusiasm, turning to her friend Asha with a smile. “I can’t believe we’re working in the children’s ward! This is going to be amazing. I love kids!” Asha, however, seemed less enthusiastic and gave Aarohi a nervous glance. “I wouldn’t get too excited just yet,” she warned in a low voice. “Haven’t you heard about the head of the ward? Dr. Ishaan Sharma is one of the strictest doctors here. In his presence, you won’t need any British military to discipline you!” Aarohi’s excitement faltered for a moment. She swallowed her nerves but forced a reassuring smile. “Well, it’s still going to be exciting. We just have to do our best, right?” Her friends nodded, though the anxiety was palpable. Together, they walked down the wide corridors towards the children’s ward, where the sounds of giggling and playful cries echoed. As they entered, Aarohi was disappointed to see the lack of colorful murals or bright decorations that could make the ward feel warmer and more welcoming for the children. The plain, sterile walls heightened her nerves, making her wonder why the hospital hadn’t made the children’s ward more cheerful. She whispered to herself, "Can't they make the ward livelier? It’s a children’s space; it should reflect their spirit." As they entered the ward, their eyes fell on Dr. Ishaan Sharma. He stood tall at the center of the room, his sharp, intelligent gaze sweeping over the new group of doctors. Dr. Ishaan was an imposing figure, not just because of his height but due to the aura of authority he carried. He was elegant and handsome, his face marked by lines of experience rather than age. Despite being ten years older than Aarohi, his fit physique and confident posture made him appear younger, and his presence commanded respect without him uttering a word. When his gaze landed on Aarohi, something flickered in his eyes—a hint of curiosity. Her innocent face, framed by her soft features and expressive eyes, stood out among the group. There was a mix of excitement and seriousness in her expression that seemed to catch his attention more than he expected. His eyes lingered on her a moment longer than necessary before he cleared his throat and continued. “Welcome,” Dr. Ishaan said, his voice calm but firm. “I’m Dr. Ishaan Sharma, the head of this ward. The children’s ward is a place of responsibility, compassion, and precision. I expect the best from all of you.” Aarohi tried to meet his gaze with confidence, but her heart raced. His reputation as a strict and professional doctor preceded him, and she could feel the tension among her colleagues. Dr. Sai Devi, a senior doctor who had been standing next to Dr. Ishaan, stepped forward with a warm smile. Her demeanor was noticeably softer. “I’m Dr. Sai Devi,” she said, her voice kind. “I’ll be working closely with all of you. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask. Our goal here is to give the best care possible to these children, and I trust you’re all capable of doing that.” Aarohi exhaled slightly, grateful for Dr. Sai Devi’s warmth, but her attention was quickly drawn back to Dr. Ishaan, who had resumed speaking. “Our mission here is simple,” he said. “Every child who enters this ward is our responsibility. We don’t just treat illnesses; we give them hope. But that requires discipline, attention to detail, and a refusal to tolerate mistakes.” He glanced sharply at each of the new doctors, his gaze briefly resting on Aarohi again as if silently reminding her of the high expectations. Aarohi couldn’t help but admire his dedication, even though his strictness intimidated her. There was a passion in his words, a deep commitment to his patients. While her friends seemed to shrink under his intense gaze, Aarohi felt a mixture of nerves and inspiration brewing inside her. As Dr. Sai Devi began showing them around the ward, Aarohi leaned towards Asha and whispered, “He’s a bit intimidating, don’t you think?” Asha nodded quickly, her eyes wide. “Definitely. But did you see how he looked at you? I think you caught his attention.” Aarohi blushed, brushing off the comment. “I doubt it. He was just sizing up the new doctors.” Still, the flutter of excitement and nervousness lingered within her. The day had only just begun, and Aarohi knew her journey in the hospital was going to be anything but ordinary. After a long and exhausting day filled with new responsibilities and excitement, Aarohi returned home. The evening air was cool, and as she stepped into the quiet home, her father, Mr. Sinha, sat in the lounge, reading a book under the soft glow of a lamp. “How was your first day, beta?” he asked, lowering the book to look at her. Aarohi couldn’t hold back her enthusiasm. “It was incredible, Baba! I’ve been assigned to the children’s ward. I’ve always wanted to work with kids, and it feels so right.” She paused, smiling to herself before adding, “Though the head of the ward, Dr. Ishaan Sharma, is strict… very strict. But you can see how much he cares about the children.” Her father’s eyes twinkled with pride. “That sounds like a place where you’ll make a real difference, Aarohi. And don’t worry about the strictness—it’s good to have someone who sets high standards.” Aarohi nodded, sinking into a chair beside him. “You’re right, Baba. I just need to focus, learn as much as I can, and do my best.” Mr. Sinha smiled. “That’s my girl. I’m proud of you, Aarohi. Remember, this is just the beginning. You’ve got a long road ahead, but I know you’ll make it through.” Feeling reassured, Aarohi leaned back, content after a day full of new experiences and a growing sense of responsibility. She knew her journey as a doctor had only begun, and though challenges awaited her, she was ready to face them head-on.
