Chapter 4By tradition, the wedding ceremony was followed by hours of merrymaking—feasting, music, plays and performances. Noemi sat beside Caterina at the head of the table in the palace courtyard, doing her best to eat some of the delicacies set before them, and watching her new wife from the corner of her eye.
Her wife. A bizarre phrase, a bizarre situation, but it was done. For the next three years, possibly the rest of their lives, they were bound together, and there was a certain relief to having that…done. Decided. There was no turning back, and so it was time to look forward. Noemi couldn’t spend the rest of her life awkward and prickly and embarrassed about the situation, making a fool of herself.
