CHAPTER FOUR- INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY
After Vicky got released from detention, he seemed more determined to find out what secret his parents kept from him, especially now that Maya offered to help him. He still wondered what it was about her that made him trust her enough to let her in on the situation.Vicky showed Maya his house and his parents were happy that he finally made a friend, especially after the incident. “Mum, this is Maya. She’s a friend from school. We have an assignment together so that’s why she came over. I hope its fine by you”, Vicky said after he had introduced her to his parents. “It’s totally fine. I’m just happy that you have a new friend now. Maya, please make yourself comfortable okay. You are very much welcome here.”“Thank you Ma. It’s so nice to meet you”, Maya responded, smiling from ear to ear. “We have some things to do mum, so we will be in my room”, Vicky stated dragging Maya with him. “Oh, school work right?” Franca asked. “Yes mum”, Vicky responded. “Alright then”, Franca said to the duo that was already making their way to his room. As soon as they were no longer in sight, Franca heaved a heavy sigh. Troy noticed her change in countenance and asked her what was wrong. Franca responded, “I don’t think the kids were saying the truth”. “What do you mean?” Troy asked in confusion.“Well, Vicky has never mentioned Maya to us before, Also, considering everything that happened; don’t you think he moved on way too fast? Should any normal person want to be friends with such a violent person? Is it just me or is this whole friendship stuff a little suspicious?” Franca stated.“Franca honey, I think you may be over thinking it. Yes, you have a point, but I don’t think there’s anything to be worried about. Let’s just let them and keep an eye on them, okay?”, Troy responded, holding her hand. “I’m not so worried about Vicky. I’m more worried about Maya and what her real motives are. I know she has ulterior motives”, Franca restated her concerns; “She might be investigating him without his knowledge. What if she knows more about the… (She paused and lowered her voice more) the prophecy and those demons after our son? What if she’s even one of them?”“Relax, breathe my dear. No more ‘what ifs’. Nothing will happen I can assure you. Besides, we’ve kept this secret for years. Maya cannot possibly know anything about it. Everything will be okay, don’t worry”, Troy reassured the seemingly paranoid Franca. “If you say so. We have to keep an eye on them”, Franca replied and hugged Troy, who was also worried but dared not show it. He had to be strong for his wife.Meanwhile, in Vicky’s room, Maya seemed to notice that a lot of things seemed abnormal. As she looked at the walls of the massive bedroom, she noticed some scratches. “What happened here Vicky?”, she asked. “My mum said something passed through the wall when I was little. She didn’t say what it was and I never asked.Maya was fascinated by these faint lines on the wall. Vicky wondered why and asked her if it has anything to do with solving the mystery of his true identity. Maya paused, touched the wall and said, “What if the thing that passed through this wall actually affected you? What if it affected your brain and that’s why you keep hearing voices inside your head? What if that was the reason your mum didn’t tell you much about it? I have a gut feeling there’s more to it”.“The demon itself spoke to me. I told you about it and you said they were real”.“Yeah, which is why I think it was the same demon that smashed through this wall many years ago”, Maya stated. Vicky scoffed. “I doubt it. If what you’re insinuating is true, then I should be dead by now because it would have hurt me so bad and being a baby at the time, I should have died or at least still have scars on my body”, he added. Maya sighed, “That means a dead end then”.“Should I ask my parents to tell me more about that night?”“Of course not! If you do that, then they will know what we are really up to. We just need to figure this out by ourselves. Even if we are to ask them, it’s not yet the right time”, Maya responded. Vicky nodded in agreement. Then suddenly, his eyes widened. “What?”, Maya asked.“Something just occurred to me. That incident didn’t happen here, it happened in the United States, which was why we moved to Austria. That’s what my mum said. How come these lines are here? This is weird and scary”, Vicky narrated.“What are you saying? The lines are right here”, Maya asked confused.Vicky got up from the bed he had been sitting on, walked towards the wall and touched it. He removed his hand almost immediately after touching it. “Someone or something is on the other side of this wall. I felt a hand!” Maya touched the wall, “I don’t feel anything”, she said. “You’re not one of them, that is why you can’t feel it. I’m a demon, I’m a demon! I didn’t ask for this. What the hell is happening?”, Vicky started to breathe heavily. Maya began to calm him down. There she was again with that soothing voice that made him forget all that was going on around him. “You are not a demon. Listen to me, don’t be scared. You can fight this, we can… together. You are not a Sendonkan, you are Victor Thomas. Say it with me, I am Victor Thomas, I am not a demon”, they both said the words and Vicky was calm. After a while, Maya urged him to remember anything else that may have happened while in Austria.“I remember one time I overheard my parents talking about some secret or prophecy and some imminent disaster. All this is just cracking me up with fear. We know what the secret is now…I’m half-human half-demon. The question now is how did I get possessed, by who and how do I get rid of it?”, Vicky stated.“Exactly! We have some more research to do. Maybe we will find something that can help us get rid of it”, Maya suggested.“Thanks for helping me out with this Maya. At least I know I’m not alone in this fight”, Vicky said smiling at her. Maya nodded back and started to pack her bag. It was getting late; she needed to get home before dark. On her way out, Franca stopped her at the doorway. “Are you leaving already Maya?” she asked her. “Yes ma’am. It’s getting late so I have to get home. Thanks for welcoming me”, Maya responded and tried to open the door. Franca held back the door. She looked at Maya intensely. Maya was feeling a bit tense. Why was she looking at her like that? Then Franca broke the silence. “I hope you don’t plan on harming my son”, she said. Maya breathed out. She had been holding her breath. “Of course not ma. I would never hurt Vicky. He’s my friend. I just want to help him through whatever happened at school”, Maya replied stuttering.“I don’t mean to scare you Maya. I’m just looking out for my son, that’s all. You may go now”, Franca told her, opening the door. Maya nodded slowly, and turned and dashed out of the house. “That was intense”, she muttered under her breath and she walked off. Franca stared at her retreating figure for a while, wondering why Maya decided to be friends with her son even after what had happened with the bullies. “If only she knew the truth about Vicky, she would fear him and not befriend him”, she thought. Shutting the door behind her, she proceeded to Vicky’s room. Vicky was still staring at the wall after Maya left. His mother’s entrance disrupted his thoughts. “Vicky is everything alright with you? You look pale and disturbed. Maya also left in a hurry. Did something happen that you’d like to talk about?”, she asked. She made her way to him sitting on the bed. Vicky looked at her, and looked away. “Nothing is wrong mum. I’m just stressed from school work”, he lied. Franca looked at him and smiled. “Alright then, get some rest okay. I’ll leave you to it”, she said and got up to leave. “Sure, leave. But you will never be able to free your son from us, not even Maya”, someone said.“Did you say something Vicky?”, Franca asked turning sharply. “No, did you hear something?”, Vicky replied. “It must have been a mistake. I need to rest as well”, Franca responded. “Yes mum, get some sleep. It Hs been a hectic day for everyone”, Vicky added. Franca nodded and left the room. As she shut the door behind her, she wondered what that was all about. “Am I hallucinating? Maybe I just need to rest”, she shook her head and left for her room. Vicky also wondered what that was all about, but he shrugged it off. He had more important things to worry about. On getting home, Maya met her older brother Dave outside the house waiting for her. “What took you so long to get home? I almost thought you got lost!”, Dave said laughing. “Very funny Dave, but I have work to do”, Maya responding smiling. “Work? Who in their right mind gave you a job?”, Dave asked laughing. “Not that kind of work. It’s a serious issue”, Maya responded as she headed for her room. “Sounds pretty serious. How serious is this work of yours?”, Dave asked air quoting the word ‘work’. It’s serious, very serious. Now if you would excuse me douche bag, I got to go”, Maya answered firmly. “Oh she’s serious. Can I know what it is? Maybe I can help’, Dave said. “No, you can’t. It’s a secret between me and Vicky”, she answered.“Vicky? Who the hell is that?”“Just stay out of this would you?”, Maya requested with a fake smile on her face and slammed her bedroom door. “What’s up with her? Whatever, at least she’s home”, Dave said to himself and retired to his room.
