Chapter 2: The Ambush

328 Words
We had been trekking through the jungle for days, the terrain becoming increasingly treacherous. The soldiers were on high alert, their weapons at the ready. Sebastian and Amelia were focused on the task at hand, their eyes fixed on the maps and devices that would lead us to the artifact. And then, without warning, chaos erupted. A bullet whizzed past my ear, and I hit the ground instinctively. The soldiers returned fire, but I couldn’t see our attackers. The sounds of gunfire and shouts filled the air, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest. “Get down!” one of the soldiers yelled, pulling me behind a tree. I peeked around the edge, trying to get a glimpse of who was attacking us. That’s when I saw him—Tony Maya, or Mystic Maze, as he was known. He was tall, with a smirk on his face that made my blood boil. He seemed to be enjoying the chaos he had unleashed. “You’re not taking anything else from this jungle,” he sneered, his voice carrying over the noise of the battle. I didn’t have time to respond. Another bullet came my way, and I ducked back behind the tree. The soldiers were holding their own, but I could tell we were outnumbered. I knew I had to do something, but I didn’t know what. That’s when I heard Amelia’s voice, calm and steady. “James, we need to get out of here. Now.” I nodded, grabbing her arm and pulling her toward Sebastian, who was already moving through the underbrush. The soldiers covered our retreat, firing back at our attackers to give us time to escape. We ran as fast as we could, the sounds of gunfire fading into the distance as we put more space between us and Mystic Maze. But I knew this wasn’t over. He would come after us again, and next time, we might not be so lucky.
