Pearl’s P.O.V. (Continued) “How is he?” I asked my father anxiously when he entered my room with a grim and exhausted expression. “He is still in surgery. She not only thrust the knife inside his stomach but twisted it cruelly before anyone could push her away,” he replied to me tiredly while going towards the couch. All my friends who were sitting there immediately stood up, leaving a good space for him. “I want to go there, Dad. I am his fiancée. I should be there, not here.” I spoke frantically, restless, anxious and scared. “You can’t go out, Pearl. Try to understand the situation.” Dad replied to me the same thing that he and mom had been saying to me since they took Jack to the hospital. “And why can’t?” I yelled out of rage, glaring hard at him. “I am his fiancée. We would have finished our wedding by now if he isn’t in this state. I ….. I should have been with him there, not sitting here,” I yelled again, unable to suppress my anger and frustration by now. “You can’t because you still have to go through the wedding ceremony, Pearl.” He yelled back, but his statement left me both speechless and breathless. I forgot to cry and just blinked in a daze. “What? What are you saying, Dad? Jack is still in surgery. Don’t tell us that you guys are planning to hold the surgery in the hospital,” Sapphire yelled, shocked and disbelief evident in her voice. My mind had completely refused to process or register anything by now. In just a few hours, my whole world had turned upside down. I have always been clear-minded when it comes to solving a crisis, but this crisis was the worst. I had been trained to be the heiress all my life, but right now, I ….. I didn’t know what I exactly was. “It…. It’s not like this, Sapphire…. I….. we…. thought th… that we still have some time…. We…. we thought th… that we would explain everyth… everything to you and Jack before you two go for your wedding night…. B… but.” I listened to my father in a daze. Have some time?? Explained??? “Dad…. Don’t play puzzle games with us, okay? Tell me how you are planning to marry them tonight, huh? Let her go to Jack, Dad. Even though this marriage is not about love, they are still engaged, and she should be with him right now instead of sitting here like an abandoned and helpless puppy.” Sylvia continued yelling at our father while crying. “Just calm down, Sapphire. I… I know th… that I am sounding insane, but lets everyone come here.” Dad replied to her in a frustrated tone, but I paid attention to his statement. “Everyone?” I asked him in a daze, making all of them look at me. “Who everyone, Dad?” I asked him in the same state. Sapphire was now holding me from behind. And I was glad that she was because I had already lost all the strength of my life. At the same time, Dad’s phone started ringing. I saw him taking the call hurriedly. “Is he okay?” he asked the caller anxiously. My ears immediately perked up, and I snapped out of my trance. “Thank god! Thank god! It….. it’s good.” He exclaimed aloud in relief, but it only made my heart beat furiously in anticipation. It must be about Jack. “No…. it… it will be better if you all come here. Try to understand her mental state too.” I could hear my own heartbeat while listening to Dad’s conversation with whoever had called him. “Okay.” He hung up and looked at me with a complex emotion in his gaze. “Jack is out of OR and is in the recovery room. He… he is still critical, but doctors are optimistic about his condition given the fact that he is still young.” I almost collapsed in Sapphire’s embrace when the relief washed over me. Thank god!!! Yeah. Thank god!!!! “Easy, sis. I got you.” Sapphire comforted me and dragged me towards the couch. Everyone moved away, but I just breathed in relief. “Here…. Drink some water first.” Someone offered me a glass of water, but my vision was too blurred to recognize her face. I drank some water, or it’s better to say that Sapphire made me drink some water. “You should stop crying now. He will be okay soon.” She comforted me while making me drink water. “Can I go to see him now?” I asked my father in a shaky voice after calming myself down a bit. “I am sorry, kiddo. I really am. All of them will be here in a few minutes. Just wait a little longer and you will get your answers.” He replied to me in a troubled tone, sounding worried. My parents weren’t like those parents who raised their children as a possession, and used to use them to build up connections in the business world later. Even though my marriage to Jack was arranged, and we did have some business arrangements based on this marriage arrangement, my parents asked me to spend some time with Jack before agreeing to the proposal. So, now I am completely confused by my father’s behavior. I was so restless that I felt like yelling aloud in a fit of rage. The door opened and my father’s elder brother, Uncle Wilson Nickelson, and his wife, Aunt Sofia Nickelson entered the room. “Are you okay, honey?” Aunt Sofia asked me worriedly while walking towards me. I also stood up and whimpered once. Our family members always had a harmonious relationship. Aunt Sofia always treated both me and Sapphire like her daughter, Vera. And after her death two years ago, Aunt Sofia couldn’t come out of her depression. “I am okay, Aunt.” I replied in a choked voice while embracing her. The door opened again, making me look in that direction. My mom entered the room with a small boy in her embrace. Aunt Sophia also looked in that direction and immediately broke the embrace. “Is he asleep?” Aunt Sophia asked Mom worriedly while going towards them. The next person who entered behind my mom made me blink in confusion. His dark hazel eyes met mine. The coldness and detachment in his eyes always intrigued me, but this wasn’t the time to think about his emotions. Why is he here? Shouldn’t he be in the hospital with the rest of the family? “Is jack better now?” Aunt Sophia asked him worriedly while taking that little boy from my mother’s embrace. “He is out of OR, mom. They are shifting him to the ICU for the time being.” He answered Aunt Sophia in a gentle tone, though. Sapphire tapped on my shoulder and signaled me to sit down again. I did exactly the same thing but was still looking at my phone from time to time for any other update. I had my friend keeping eyes on Jack's condition too. I didn't know why, but now I have a very bad feeling about what is coming to me next. “Uhhhh… well there is something…. That I wanted to discuss with you and Pearl in the presence of all the parent figures, but I just got a message from Ethan. They will be here after shifting Jack to the ICU, but he wants me to explain things to you guys before they come here.” Dad spoke to us in a serious tone after everyone settled down.
