The sound of voices echoed through the glass corridors of Velez & Partners. By the time Lara stepped out of the elevator, every pair of eyes seemed locked on her.
It wasn’t subtle. It wasn’t quiet. It was the sharp, biting curiosity of people who had already decided what they believed.
Sleeping with the boss…
No wonder she’s still here…
She could almost hear their unspoken thoughts.
For a second, Lara thought about turning around and leaving—but she squared her shoulders and walked into the main conference room. If she’d decided to stay and fight, there was no running now.
---
Inside, the entire senior staff sat around a long table. Adrian was at the head, standing rather than sitting, posture tense and commanding. He looked like someone who hadn’t slept, yet his eyes were razor-sharp.
“Everyone here?” he asked, scanning the room.
“Yes, sir,” one of the partners said.
Adrian’s gaze swept the room, landing on Keller—who sat stiffly, face pale but defiant.
“Good. Let’s start,” Adrian said. “Yesterday, one of our own orchestrated a harassment campaign designed to intimidate and manipulate. That ends today. Effective immediately, J. Keller is suspended, pending investigation.”
A gasp went around the table. Keller stood up. “This is ridiculous. You can’t just—”
Adrian’s voice cut like a knife. “I can, and I just did. You used a criminal fixer to threaten an employee. You risked this firm’s reputation and put someone’s life in danger. Get out of this building before I have security remove you.”
Keller’s jaw clenched, but the security team was already moving toward him. He grabbed his briefcase and stormed out, shoving past Lara in the doorway.
His eyes met hers for a second. Hatred. Pure, sharp hatred. She shivered but held her ground.
---
As Keller’s footsteps faded, murmurs filled the room. Adrian raised a hand and silence snapped back instantly.
“This firm runs on loyalty and trust,” Adrian said. “What happened here isn’t just illegal—it’s personal. From now on, all client communication will go through me directly until I say otherwise. Questions?”
No one spoke.
“Meeting adjourned.”
---
Outside the room, whispers chased Lara like smoke. She felt them on her skin, heavier than any physical touch. They think I’m sleeping with him.
She was sleeping with him—well, she had kissed him, stayed in his apartment, and there was no hiding the chemistry anymore. But that wasn’t how she wanted people to see her—like a shortcut, like she hadn’t earned her place.
Adrian appeared beside her. “Walk with me.”
His tone didn’t invite debate. She followed him into his office, grateful for the heavy door that shut out the noise.
---
Adrian paced once, then turned to her. “Ignore them.”
Her laugh was humorless. “Easy for you to say. You’re Adrian Velez. They fear you. They’re not whispering that you slept your way into an internship.”
He stopped pacing, his eyes meeting hers. “Lara, look at me.”
She did.
“You earned your place here. You were the best in your class. You’ve done flawless work. Nothing about this changes that. Understand?”
Her throat tightened. “It feels like it changes everything.”
He stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Then let them talk. I don’t care. I care about you.”
Her breath caught. That was the problem—he meant it. And now the entire firm probably knew it.
---
“I can’t hide in your apartment forever,” she said. “I came here to work, not to… be a liability.”
Adrian’s jaw flexed. “You’re not a liability. You’re a target because of me. That’s my failure, not yours.”
“Then let me choose how I handle it,” she said softly.
Something flickered in his eyes—pride, maybe, or reluctant respect. “You’re sure you want to keep doing this? Walking through whispers every day? Being under their eyes?”
“Yes.” She straightened. “I decided to stay. That hasn’t changed.”
A corner of his mouth twitched, almost a smile. “All right. Then we fight on two fronts—external and internal.”
---
Later that afternoon, as the storm in the firm settled into an uneasy silence, Adrian leaned on the edge of her desk.
“You free tonight?”
Lara looked up from her files. “For…?”
“For dinner,” he said, his tone casual but his eyes intense. “No hidden agenda. Just food and talking. Unless you say no.”
Her lips curved despite the day’s tension. “Okay. Dinner.”
“Good.” He left with the faintest trace of a smile, like a man who had just claimed some small victory.
---
That evening, as she packed her bag, her phone buzzed. One new message.
You cut one head, two grow back.
Her stomach dropped. She read it twice, then again, as if the words might change. They didn’t.
When Adrian appeared at her side, she simply held up the phone. He read it, face unreadable for a long second, then he took the device from her gently and set it on the desk.
“They’re regrouping,” he said quietly. “That’s fine. So will we.”
Lara frowned. “You sound like you expected this.”
“I did.” His eyes met hers, sharp and dangerous. “This isn’t over. It’s just starting.”
---
Lara stared at the message, heart hammering. Whoever was behind this wasn’t finished. And Adrian Velez looked ready to burn the world down to protect her.
