Chapter Ten
Baker Company was the first group in the 82nd to board the ship. The trip was going to take about two weeks depending on the weather. That was a faction of the time it took for the trip over here in 1942. Back then, we had to spend time searching survivors from the two troop ships that had been sunk, and then, we had to sail at half speed to mask the sound from the U Boats. We weren’t going to encounter any U Boats on the way back.
As the English skyline faded out of sight, I left the upper deck and went below. I still had a nostalgic feeling in my stomach. If I was a real man, I thought, I would have leveled with Lucy and told her why I wouldn’t be returning to England. Well, it’s too late now.
