THE CONFRONTATION AND AFTERMATH

Serena Calloway’s POV The night air was cold against my skin. My breath came in sharp, uneven bursts as I stormed down the corridor. My heart pounded like a war drum. My hands trembled, clenched into fists at my sides. Noah and Cassidy stood a few feet away, their faces pale under the dim lighting. Their bodies tensed as I approached. I stopped in front of them, my chest rising and falling with anger. “Why?” My voice broke. “Why did you do this to me?” Cassidy dropped her gaze. Noah shifted uncomfortably, rubbing the back of his neck. “Serena,” he started. “No,” I snapped. “No excuses. No lies.” My voice echoed in the empty hallway. The weight of betrayal pressed down on me, suffocating and cruel. “I deserve the truth,” I said, my voice trembling. Noah sighed, his jaw tightening. “It was a mistake.” A bitter laugh escaped me. “A mistake?” I repeated, my voice dripping with disbelief. Cassidy stepped forward. “Serena, please. I never wanted to hurt you.” I turned to her, my eyes burning. “You were my best friend,” I whispered. “You stood by my side today. You smiled at me. And the whole time, you were sleeping with my husband.” Tears welled in her eyes. “It was not supposed to happen.” I scoffed. “But it did.” Noah ran a hand through his hair. “Serena, I love you.” My stomach twisted. “You don’t do this to someone you love.” My voice cracked. He reached for me. I took a step back. “Do not touch me.” My voice was sharp, cutting through the space between us. Noah’s face fell. I swallowed the lump in my throat. “How long?” Cassidy hesitated. I turned to Noah. “How long?” I demanded. His eyes darted to the floor. His silence was my answer. I felt sick. Months. They had been betraying me for months. I wrapped my arms around myself, as if that would keep me from falling apart. Noah exhaled. “It didn’t mean anything.” My vision blurred. “It meant everything to me.” Cassidy wiped her tears. “Serena, I never meant for this to happen.” “Stop saying that,” I hissed. “You made a choice. Both of you.” The pain in my chest grew unbearable. “You ruined everything,” I whispered. Noah’s hands curled into fists. “I made a mistake.” Another mistake. I let out a shaky breath. “If you truly loved me, you wouldn’t have done this.” He stayed silent. Cassidy sobbed. “Please, Serena, don’t hate me.” I looked at her, really looked at her. The woman I once trusted more than anyone. “I don’t hate you,” I said, my voice hollow. “But I will never forgive you.” Her face crumbled. I turned to Noah. “And you,” I said, my voice breaking. “You promised me forever.” His eyes were filled with regret. “I never wanted to hurt you.” I took a deep breath. My heart felt like it was being ripped apart. I wiped my tears and straightened my shoulders. “We are done.” Noah stepped forward. “Serena, please.” I shook my head. “No.” He froze. I turned on my heel and walked away. My vision blurred with tears. My body ached with heartbreak. The wedding celebration was over. So was my marriage. And so was everything I had believed in. - - - - - - - - - - - - My footsteps echoed as I walked away. My body trembled, my mind spinning. The laughter and music from the reception felt distant, like a cruel reminder of the happiness I had lost. I reached my suite and slammed the door behind me. My chest heaved, the weight of betrayal crushing me. I pressed my hands against my face, trying to steady my breathing. How had this happened? How had my perfect day turned into my worst nightmare? I looked around the luxurious room. The silk sheets, the expensive flowers, the champagne on ice—it all mocked me. Everything was supposed to be perfect. Tears burned my eyes. I ripped off my veil and threw it across the room. My hands moved to the bodice of my dress, tearing at the lace. I needed to get out of it. I rushed to the mirror. My reflection stared back at me, eyes red, lips trembling. I had never felt so small. So humiliated. A knock sounded at the door. “Serena, open up.” Noah’s voice. Anger surged through me. I turned away from the mirror, my fists clenching. “Go away,” I said. “Please, just let me explain.” I let out a bitter laugh. “Explain what? That you slept with my best friend on our wedding day?” Silence. Then a sigh. “It wasn’t like that.” I marched to the door and yanked it open. He stood there, his face pale, his eyes desperate. “How was it, then?” I demanded. He opened his mouth, but no words came. I let out a shaky breath. “You are unbelievable.” “I love you,” he said, voice soft. Rage burned in my chest. “No, you don’t.” “Yes, I do.” I shook my head. “Love is loyalty, respect, trust. You gave me none of that.” His jaw tightened. “It was a mistake.” I glared at him. “Stop calling it that. A mistake is forgetting an anniversary or saying something hurtful in anger. What you did was a choice.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t know what to say.” I crossed my arms. “There’s nothing left to say, Noah. You destroyed everything.” He took a step closer. “Can we talk about this?” I stepped back. “No.” Pain flickered in his eyes. “Please, Serena.” I swallowed hard. “Leave.” His shoulders dropped. He hesitated, but finally nodded. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. I shut the door in his face. The moment he was gone, my knees buckled. I sank to the floor, pressing my hands to my mouth as the sobs came. I had given him my heart. And he had shattered it. Minutes passed. Maybe hours. I didn’t know. A soft knock pulled me from my misery. “Serena?” It was my sister, Lila. I wiped my tears and pulled the door open. Her face filled with worry the moment she saw me. “Oh my God.” She rushed inside and wrapped her arms around me. “What happened?” I clung to her, my body shaking. “Noah…” My voice cracked. “He cheated.” Lila stiffened. “What?” I pulled away, wiping my eyes. “With Cassidy.” Her mouth fell open. “That lying—” She stopped herself, taking a deep breath. “When?” “Tonight.” Her hands curled into fists. “I’ll kill them.” I let out a weak laugh. “Get in line.” She sat beside me, her arm around my shoulders. “I’m so sorry, Serena.” I leaned against her. “I don’t know what to do.” She sighed. “You deserve better than this.” Tears welled in my eyes again. “I thought he loved me.” Her grip tightened. “He doesn’t deserve you.” I sniffled. “What do I do now?” She pulled back, looking me in the eyes. “You walk away.” I swallowed hard. Could I? Could I really leave behind everything? The wedding. The life I had imagined. The man I thought I knew. Lila squeezed my hand. “You don’t have to decide tonight. Just rest, okay?” I nodded, though rest felt impossible. She stayed with me until my breathing steadied. Until the tears slowed. Until the pain settled into something deeper. Resolve. Noah Whitmore had broken my heart. But he would not break me.
