THE SHATTERING DISCOVERY

Serena Calloway’s POV The night had settled into a quiet hum. Laughter still floated from the ballroom, but the energy had softened. The air smelled of roses and champagne. Everything was perfect. Or so I thought. I needed a moment alone. The weight of the long day pressed on my chest. Excusing myself from the guests, I walked down the quiet hallway leading to our private suite. My heels clicked softly against the marble floor. Inside the suite, a peaceful silence wrapped around me. I sighed, running my fingers through my curls. My heart felt full, yet something inside me stirred with unease. I told myself it was exhaustion. I made my way to the bathroom. The cool light reflected off the gold fixtures, making everything gleam. I placed my hands on the sink and took a deep breath. The day had been overwhelming, in the best way. I was married. I was Noah’s wife. A small smile touched my lips. Then I heard something. A faint sound. A hushed whisper. I straightened, my heart skipping a beat. The sound came from a door slightly ajar—the private toilet room. My breath slowed. The soft rustle of fabric and a low murmur of voices drifted through the gap. I stepped closer. My stomach twisted. Something told me to turn away. To leave. To not look. But I did. Through the c***k in the door, I saw them. Noah. Cassidy. Their bodies pressed close. His hands rested on her waist. Her fingers trailed over his chest. Their lips—so close, too close. They are having s*x. My newly wedded husband and my best friend are lucked up making love … ha… A sharp, searing pain tore through me. My breath hitched. The walls seemed to close in. My ears rang. The floor beneath me felt unsteady. My heart pounded so hard it hurt. No. Noah. My husband. Cassidy. My best friend. The air left my lungs. A cold, suffocating numbness spread through me. They did not see me. Not yet. I wanted to scream. To barge in and tear them apart. But I could not move. I watched, frozen, as Noah whispered something to her. Cassidy laughed softly, tilting her head up to him. Her smile was the one she used when she wanted something. I knew that smile. And he gave in to it. His lips brushed hers. A touch so gentle, so familiar. The betrayal sliced through me. A strangled sound escaped my throat. They turned. Their eyes met mine. Cassidy’s face paled. Her lips parted, but no words came out. Noah’s expression shifted. Shock. Guilt. Fear. “Serena!!!,” he breathed. His voice was distant, like a memory fading into darkness. I shook my head. My whole body trembled. My vision blurred. “No.” My voice cracked. “No.” I stumbled backward. The room tilted. My heart felt like it was being ripped from my chest. “Serena, wait—” Noah moved toward me. I stepped back, holding up a hand. “Don’t.” My voice broke. Tears spilled down my cheeks. Cassidy looked down, shame flickering across her face. But she said nothing. The silence was deafening. My mind screamed with questions. How long? How could they? Why? Noah reached for me again. “It’s not what you think.” A bitter laugh escaped me. “Not what I think?” My voice rose. My hands clenched into fists. “I just saw you.” His jaw tightened. “Let me explain.” “Explain?” My chest ached. “Explain how you kissed my best friend on our wedding night?” He exhaled sharply. “It was a mistake.” A mistake. The word burned. I looked at Cassidy. She still would not meet my gaze. “Say something,” I whispered. Her lips trembled. “I—” I let out a shaky breath. “How could you do this to me?” She flinched. “I didn’t mean for this to happen.” A bitter laugh escaped me. “You didn’t mean to betray me?” Tears welled in her eyes, but I had no sympathy left to give. I turned to Noah. “Was any of it real?” My voice wavered. “The vows? The love?” His eyes darkened. “Of course it was.” My stomach churned. “Then how could you?” He had no answer. The silence stretched between us, thick with the weight of everything that had just shattered. I wiped my tears with trembling hands. “You destroyed everything.” Noah’s hands balled into fists. “It was a mistake.” I let out a hollow laugh. “Stop saying that.” My voice cracked. “You don’t make mistakes like this.” Cassidy sniffled. “Serena, please—” I turned on her. “You were my best friend.” My voice shook with anger. “How long?” She hesitated. I stepped closer, my body shaking. “How long, Cassidy?” Her lip quivered. “It— It was just—” “Don’t lie.” My voice was sharp. My heart pounded painfully. Her gaze flickered to Noah. Guilt swam in her eyes. I sucked in a breath. It was not just tonight. I could see it in the way she looked at him. In the way he looked away. I staggered back, the truth sinking in. My heart twisted. I turned to Noah. “How long?” His jaw tightened. “Serena, please—” “How long?” I screamed. The truth hung between us. Cassidy sobbed. “A few months.” The room spun. Everything inside me crumbled. Months. My knees weakened. My hands trembled. I pressed a hand to my stomach, trying to keep from breaking apart. Noah stepped forward. “Serena, I love you.” A sharp, burning pain ripped through me. I shook my head. “No. You don’t.” His eyes pleaded with me. “I do.” I let out a shaky breath. “Love doesn’t do this.” Tears streamed down my face. My hands trembled at my sides. Cassidy sobbed. “I never wanted to hurt you.” I looked at her. My best friend. My betrayer. A hollow laugh escaped me. “But you did.” I turned back to Noah. My husband. The man I had loved with everything I had. “You both did.” The weight of betrayal crushed me. My wedding night was ruined. My love was ruined. Everything was ruined. I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I never want to see either of you again.” Noah reached for me. “Serena, don’t do this.” I stepped back. “You already did.” Then I turned. And I walked away. Tears blurred my vision. Pain clawed at my chest. My heart shattered with every step. The celebration was over. And so was everything I had believed in.
