Chapter Two: Negotiating with the Devil

1254 Words
The interior of the Maybach smelled of expensive leather, cold rain, and faint cedarwood. The moment the heavy door slammed shut, cutting off the roar of the storm and the flashing cameras outside, the silence inside the cabin became deafening. Elena sat on the dark leather seat, her rain-soaked black dress clinging to her skin. She didn't shiver. She sat with her spine perfectly straight, her hands folded in her lap over her clutch, refusing to show a single trace of vulnerability. Beside her, Luca DeSantis leaned back into his seat with practiced elegance. He didn't rush to speak. He simply unbuttoned his wool overcoat, draped it over his knee, and turned his head to study her. His dark eyes were cold, analytical, and dangerously sharp—like a surgeon evaluating where best to place a scalpel. "My security team is currently waiting outside in the downpour, Miss Romano," Luca said softly, his deep baritone filling the enclosed space. "They generally don't appreciate being locked out of my vehicle while the daughter of our primary rival sits in the backseat. Give me one good reason I shouldn't have them drag you out into the mud." "Because if you do, Salvatore Romano takes absolute control of my family's waterfront assets by nightfall," Elena replied without a second of hesitation. "And the first thing he'll do with that power is launch an all-out, bloody war against the DeSantis docks just to prove he has the teeth to lead." Luca’s expression didn't change, but his eyes narrowed slightly. "Salvatore is a loudmouth with bad breath and worse leverage. He doesn't have the nerve for a real war." "He does when he thinks he can force me into a proxy marriage with Hector Vane," she countered. For the first time, something flickered in Luca’s eyes. A dark, dangerous shadow crossed his features, gone as quickly as it came. He tilted his head. "Hector Vane. A brutal, bankrupt thug. Charming choice for a uncle." "Salvatore gave me an ultimatum ten minutes ago beside my father's casket," Elena said, her voice dropping into a razor-thin edge. "I sign the marriage contract tonight, or my seventeen-year-old brother gets put on a boat to a corrupt facility in Palermo. I have two hours before my uncle realizes I'm not coming back to the estate to surrender." Luca rested his elbow on the leather armrest, leaning in slightly. The proximity was suffocating; the heat radiating from him was a stark contrast to the freezing rain outside. "An inspiring family tragedy," Luca murmured, his tone devoid of pity. "So you panicked and ran to the big bad wolf. What do you expect me to do, Elena? Play the knight in shining armor? Shoot your uncle for you?" "I don't need a knight, DeSantis. I need a shield." Elena looked directly into his eyes, matching his cold gaze print for print. "I know how your mind works, Luca. You’ve been quietly dismantling the Belladonna Network from the shadows for six months. You know my father didn't die of a heart attack, and you know Salvatore is just a middleman taking orders from someone higher up." Luca’s posture shifted. The casual amusement vanished instantly, replaced by a lethal, coiled stillness. His hand drifted casually toward the inside lining of his suit jacket. "Careful," Luca warned softly, his voice dropping an octave. "You're speaking about things that get people buried in unmarked graves." "You want the Belladonna Network destroyed because they abducted your father," Elena pushed forward, stepping onto the thin ice without flinching. "I want them destroyed because they murdered mine and threatened my brother. We want the exact same thing." "And what, precisely, are you offering?" "My father left behind an encrypted ledger and a set of master keys to the Romano family's private shipping distribution codes," Elena said smoothly, playing her highest card. "Salvatore doesn't have them. The council doesn't have them. I have them. I will give you access to those codes—giving you total operational control of the harbor—on one condition." Luca raised a dark eyebrow. "Name it." "A public, ironclad fake engagement," Elena said clearly. "Between you and me. Announced today." Silence descended upon the car like an iron weight. Luca stared at her, a faint, incredulous quiet settling over his sharp features. "A fake engagement." "Under syndicate law, a registered engagement contract to a senior family heir supersedes all collateral family claims," Elena explained, her voice steady and tactical. "The moment I am officially pledged to the head of the DeSantis family, Salvatore loses all legal and political guardianship over me and Nico. He can't force me to marry Vane, and he can't touch my brother without bringing the entire DeSantis military structure down on his head." "And what do I get out of spending my precious time pretending to cherish Vittorio Romano's daughter?" Luca asked, his voice low and dangerous. "You get total legal access to the eastern docks without firing a single bullet," she replied. "You freeze Salvatore's power grab before it starts, and you get a partner inside the Romano house who can decode my father's records for you." Luca didn't speak for a long, agonizing minute. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a gold lighter, and turned it over in his fingers. The metallic clack echoed through the car. "You're sharp," Luca said softly, his gaze locked on her face. "Clever. Cold under pressure. Just like Vittorio taught you." He suddenly reached across the seat. Before Elena could react, his large, calloused hand cupped the back of her neck, his thumb resting over the racing pulse point at her throat. He pulled her forward until her face was inches from his. She could smell the crisp, dark note of his cologne, feel the immense physical power held effortlessly in check behind his tailored suit. Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs, but she didn't pull back. She held his gaze, her blade sliding silently into her palm beneath the folds of her skirt just in case. "If we do this, Elena," Luca whispered against her lips, his breath warm and intoxicating, "it isn't just a piece of paper. The underworld doesn't buy fake smiles. We will have to walk into rooms full of men who want us dead, and we will have to make them believe every second of it. Public devotion. Absolute physical unity. You move where I say, you stay where I can see you, and you obey my security protocols." "I don't take orders, DeSantis," she gritted out, her eyes blazing. "You do if you want your brother to stay alive," Luca countered smoothly, his thumb rubbing a slow, feather-light line along her jawline that sent a sudden, unwanted shiver straight down her spine. "A DeSantis engagement is sealed in blood and public absolute possession. Are you prepared to play that game, Miss Romano?" Elena swallowed hard, feeling the razor-thin boundary between strategic alliance and terrifying intimacy begin to blur before they had even signed a contract. "Try me," she whispered. A slow, dark, wicked smirk spread across Luca’s face. He released her neck, pulled his hand back, and tapped twice on the glass dividing the front cab. The locks clicked open. "Driver," Luca commanded calmly as his bodyguards opened the heavy doors, "take us to my private estate office. And send a message to Salvatore Romano." Luca turned back to Elena, his eyes gleaming with dark promise. "Tell him his niece is indisposed. She's busy preparing for her wedding."
