Chapter Five: The First Blood and The Shared Secret

1165 Words
The DeSantis compound was quiet in the early hours of the morning, save for the rhythmic patter of rain against the tall, arched windows of the grand foyer. Elena stood by the marble staircase, watching two DeSantis guards carry Nico’s meager luggage up to the third-floor guest wing. Her brother was exhausted, his face pale and eyes heavy, but for the first time since their father’s death, the terrifying tension in his shoulders had loosened. “He’ll be safe here,” Luca said, stepping up behind her. He had removed his jacket, unbuttoned his collar, and pushed his sleeves up to his elbows. “My chief of security, Viktor, is stationed outside his door. No one enters that hallway without my personal clearance.” Elena turned to face him, the heavy black diamond ring on her finger catching the dim chandelier light. “My uncle’s threat back at the estate wasn’t just hot air, Luca. He knows something about the ledger.” “Salvatore knows only what he’s been fed,” Luca replied coldly. “He’s a pawn being played by someone who understands how to weaponize family rivalries.” “And what about you?” Elena took a step closer, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. “Were you outside my father’s study three hours before he died?” Before Luca could answer, a muffled thud echoed from the floor directly above them, followed by the sharp, metallic shatter of breaking glass. Elena didn't wait. Her instincts took over instantly. She kicked off her heels, snatched a sleek tactical dagger from the hidden sheath strapped to her inner thigh, and sprinted up the marble stairs. Luca was right beside her, his hand sweeping inside his shoulder holster to draw his matte-black 9mm with practiced, terrifying speed. They reached the third-floor corridor in seconds. The door to Nico’s room was standing wide open. Inside, a heavy storm breeze howled through a shattered window pane, rain spraying across the hardwood floor. On the ground near the bed, Viktor was down on one knee, clutching a bleeding wound on his shoulder. Near the balcony doors, a broad-shouldered man dressed in black tactical gear was dragging a terrified, struggling Nico toward the broken window. A second intruder stood guard, his silenced pistol aimed straight at Nico’s head. “Nico!” Elena screamed. The second intruder snapped his gun toward Elena, but Luca was faster. A single, muffled crack rang out from Luca’s pistol. The bullet struck the intruder’s wrist, sending his weapon spinning across the floor. Elena didn't waste the distraction. She blurred forward, her silk dress whipping around her legs. As the first intruder turned to draw a sidearm, Elena flicked her wrist, sending her thigh dagger flying through the air. The blade embedded itself deep into the assassin’s shoulder with a sickening thud. The man howled, releasing Nico. Nico scrambled backward under the bed frame as Luca closed the distance. Luca grabbed the injured assassin by the throat, slamming him violently against the stone wall beside the window frame. The second intruder tried to draw a knife with his uninjured hand, but Luca swung his heavy firearm sideways, fracturing the man’s jaw with the steel butt of the gun before tossing him senseless onto the rug. Within thirty seconds, the room fell silent again, save for the howling wind and Nico’s ragged breathing. Luca held the primary intruder pinned against the wall by his throat, his boots barely touching the floor. The man gagged, blood dripping from his shoulder onto the stone. “Who sent you?” Luca asked, his voice low, flat, and devoid of any human emotion. The intruder gritted his teeth, refusing to speak. Elena stepped up beside Luca, reaching down to search the unconscious man on the floor. She flipped his tactical vest open, checking his inner pockets. She pulled out a leather wallet, a set of lockpicks, and a heavy brass key wrapped in black felt. Elena froze. The key was intricate, crafted from solid brass with three distinct notched teeth along its spine and a unique, geometric lion head engraved on the bow. “Luca,” Elena whispered, holding the key up to the light. “Look at this.” Luca glanced down. The moment his eyes landed on the brass key, his grip on the intruder’s throat tightened so hard the man gasped for air. “Where did you get that key?” Luca demanded, leaning into the assassin's face, his dark eyes burning with a lethal fire. “The... the client,” the man choked out. “Given to us... to unlock the inner safe... at the Romano estate...” “Who is the client?” Luca growled. Before the man could answer, a faint click echoed from inside his jaw. The assassin’s eyes rolled back, his body convulsing violently as dark blood overflowed from his mouth. Luca released him instantly, letting the lifeless body slump to the floor. “Cyanide capsule in the molar. Belladonna Network signature.” Elena knelt down, inspecting the brass key in her palm. Her heart pounded against her ribs. “Luca... this key matches the second lock mechanism in my father’s study desk. But the lion head emblem...” “That isn't a Romano emblem,” Luca said, his voice dropping into a hollow, dangerous quiet as he stared down at the key. “It belongs to my father. It’s the crest of the DeSantis private signet.” Elena lifted her head, her gaze locking onto Luca’s. The air between them tightened, thick with a sudden, overwhelming realization. “Your father didn't just vanish six months ago, did he?” Elena asked softly. “He left this key behind.” “He was taken,” Luca corrected, his jaw clenching tight. “And whoever took him just sent two hitmen to use his key inside your father's house.” Luca turned toward the doorway, calling out for his secondary security team to clear the bodies and secure the windows. Then he turned back to Elena, reaching down to grab her hand—the hand wearing his mother’s ring—and pulling her up to her feet. “Your uncle didn't order this hit,” Luca said, his dark eyes searching hers in the dim light. “He’s too sloppy for cyanide pills and DeSantis signet keys. Someone else is pulling the strings from above both our families.” “Which means staying engaged isn't just a political shield anymore,” Elena said, her pulse racing as she looked into his eyes. “No,” Luca whispered, his grip tightening possessively around her fingers. “It means you and I are hunting the same ghost. Pack your brother's things into my master suite wing. You’re not sleeping out of my sight again.” Elena looked at the key in her palm, then up at the man standing over her, realizing that their dangerous, forced game had just turned into an open war.
