Back At The House Benjamin strode across the room. Fuming angrily. "Why would she do that?" he yelled, "Ungrateful girl, after all I've done for her." He stopped by the window. Stomping his foot hard on the ground. A young man was sitting quietly by the window. He watched as Benjamin threw his tantrum. "She is usually well-behaved," Benjamin smiled at the man. "She'll make a good wife, you just watch" then under his breath. "I'll see she does." The young man didn't respond. He just sat there in a world of his own. Miriam walked into the room. "Sir" she bowed slightly. Benjamin looked at her scrutinizingly. "Where were you last night?" he scowled. "Sir?" she asked. Her eyes were on the ground. "Look at me when you answer," Benjamin commanded angrily. Then he turned to fake a smile at the young man. He turned back to Miriam, who was now staring directly at his face. A little too hard. "Where were you last night?" He came again. "I was at my quarters" she replied coolly. "Doing what exactly?" he turned to face the window. When he didn't get a reply. He turned to look at Miriam. "I was asleep, sir." "You were asleep," he repeated. "so you know nothing about Ann's abscond." Miriam shook her head. "When was the last time you interacted with her?" Miriam lowered her gaze to the floor. "It was yesterday, sir. In the afternoon" "And what transpired between the both of you? I need full details", Benjamin ordered. "I just did my normal chores, before going to her room to clean it up". Miriam paused to cough lightly. "Excuse me" she whispered. Benjamin lowered himself to a seat, not moving his gaze upon her. She continued. "She was in a gloomy mood and wouldn't talk to me, so I just hurried to clean up and left." She looked up again. "That is all. I haven't seen or had any interactions with her till now." The door opened and Luther walked in. As he passed Miriam, he shot her a dirty look, before proceeding to whisper into Benjamin's ears. As they conversed, Benjamin looked over to Miriam at intervals. Miriam struggled to maintain her position. Fighting the tension building up in the room. "Leave us!" he commanded. Nudging her with glaring eyeballs. Miriam left. Luther crossed the distance to close the door. "Any update on her whereabouts?" Benjamin asked him. "The men are combing the city in search of her" he strode across the room, "she couldn't have gone that far on foot." Then he added "I knew something was off last night, but I couldn't tell what" Benjamin raised his brow at him. "I heard her conversing with someone last night, so I went to her bedroom to check. She scolded me that I was disturbing her sleep. I just had a feeling that something was off, but I could not place what exactly it was", Luther explained. "That ungrateful girl. I would teach her her place. And she would learn the hard way that I make the decisions, not her", Benjamin resumed his stride, pacing about the room. How could she do such a thing? How could she undermine me? He had given her a luxurious life, and only asked one thing of her. She married a fine suitor, someone who was going to protect her. This was for her good. She had no idea of the dangers that lurked around waiting to get their fair share of harm from her. "I ordered the men to take some precautions just in case they come across some abnormalities." "I thought these abnormalities hadn't been sighted for some years now" the young man spoke up. "They haven't been spotted, but they are still here. I know it", Luther opined. "Werewolves have gone back into being a myth, but if they ever show up again". Benjamin gritted his teeth "I'll make sure they wish they had gone into extinct." "And besides," he said, getting to his feet, "this is not about them. It's about my daughter. It's about Ann" Knock knock knock. "Come in," Benjamin called out. The door knob shook, but the door remained shut. Luther walked to the door and unlocked it. A group of six men walked in. Trailing behind one who seemed to be their leader. They bowed slightly to Benjamin. Then the leader spoke up. "Sir, we have shreds of evidence pointing to the hap that she may have ventured into the... um.....the moon forest" Luther shot a baffled look at the man. The young man stirred in his seat, adjusting his position to look at the man who had just spoken. "The moon forest?!" Benjamin asked. When the man nodded, "Dear God" "Sir," Luther walked over to Benjamin. "I reckon we make a move at once, for fear of the unknown." Benjamin started his pacing again. "The Moon Forest??" She had run into the moon forest. A place once still dreaded by the city inhabitants. Whispers of wolf sightings had been reported to the local police. Most of these calls seemed to be a sham. Citizens try to stay relevant, but he knew because it was his line of work, that there were abnormal creatures out there. "Gather the men," he ordered. Everybody sprung into action. Packing up backpacks, loading up guns, and stacking up firearms. Leaders of different groups could be heard dishing out orders to their adherents. "Do we use the moon dust?" Luther asked. "How ready is it?" Benjamin asked, strapping a revolver to the side of his girdle. "It's almost finished. What I have now is a prototype. Might work well" "No! we don't use it unless it is ready", Benjamin replied. "We don't want them knowing what we might have in stock. Should we encounter them? Though I highly doubt we could." "Sir" Luther concurred and bowed out. Benjamin pondered the possibility that a werewolf should find Ann. The werewolves. It's been ages since they were last seen. They couldn't possibly still be lurking around. For their own sake and Ann's, they had better not be. Because he would kill them, and he would do it slowly. What if they kill her? Or worse. What if they turned her in? To spite him. To put him in turmoil. He had lost his wife to the werewolves. They had taken away someone he once loved. Someone who bore his only child. What if they take that child too? No! If the werewolves appeared again. Ever. He would make them suffer. He would raze them to the ground. "Sir" the young man called, "the men are ready. They are outside waiting for you." "Hand me my staff", Benjamin motioned to the steel stick by the door. The staff was brought to him. He gripped it by the neck. Caressing the moon-shaped figure on the head. "The moon hunters," he said to himself. "The moon hunters are finally out of very long passive operations. All because of a brat. My very own brat!!" The vehicles rolled out of the building, and out into the streets. They kept a steady pace with each other. Leaving a trail of dust in the air.
