Sylvia’s POV
As I stood outside Delancy’s Bakery, the cold made me shiver, it was freaking cold this morning. sounds of car horns , and people rushing to their place of work. I squeezed my hands inside my coat pockets,I was feeling nervous. This was the for fresh start. Helen had given me a chance and I wasn’t about to waste it.
The jingling bell above the door announced my arrival as I stepped inside,l. The place was already buzzing with activity, Helen moving with purpose behind the counter.
“Morning, Sylvia!” Helen called out, handing me an apron and a hairnet. “Come meet your new coworkers.”
I tugged the hairnet into place, feeling more awkward than I cared to admit, and followed her gesture to the counter.
“This is Jaxi, my right-hand man,” Helen said, motioning to the tall guy behind the display case.
He looked up, his salt-and-pepper hair catching the light as he gave me a warm smile.
“Hey, welcome to the chaos,” he said, shaking my hand.
“And that’s Ellie,” Helen continued, pointing to the woman assembling coffee cups like a caffeinated machine.
Ellie turned to me, flashing a wide grin. Her purple hair and nose ring screamed confidence in a way I could only dream of.
“Finally! Another victim…I mean coworker. You’re gonna love it here,” she teased, her voice dripping with playful sarcasm.
“Ellie, stop scaring her,” Helen said, smirking. “We have customers waiting.”
Days past it’s either we had flour-covered hands, had ringing cash registers, and smiling customers. It was exhausting, sure, but also... nice. The atmosphere here was light and easy, a far cry from the suffocating, dangerous life I’d left behind.
Over the next few weeks, the bakery started to feel like home. Helen was patient and tough, but in a way that made me want to prove myself. Ellie kept me laughing through even the busiest mornings, and Jaxi he had this calming presence, like he’d seen it all and nothing could faze him.
Eventually, I opened up to them. I had to. They needed to know enough about my past to understand why I sometimes froze at sudden noises or flinched when strangers got too close. Instead of judgment, I found understanding.
“Girl,” Ellie had said one night after I told them my story, “ you have to be strong for yourself .”
Their support meant everything.
---
One Thursday morning as we were closing up for the day, I noticed a small package sitting on the bakery’s doorstep.
“Did someone forget their order?” I asked, picking it up.
Ellie peered over my shoulder. “Uh, nope. This has your name on it.”
My name? I frowned, tearing open the package. Inside was a delicate silver necklace, the pendant catching the light as it dangled from my fingers.
“What the...?”
Jaxi walked over, raising an eyebrow. “Looks like someone’s got a secret admirer,” he said, smirking.
I laughed nervously. “Yeah, right. I haven’t even been on a date before”
“What!!!” They both yelled
“Girl, you better be lying “ Ellie said.
She said looking at me with hoping I would say I was lying
“ Wait , you’re serious?”
“I’m glad you have a secret admirer” Jaxi said.
“ You can finally go on a date, sooner or later he’s gonna ask you out”
Over the next week, more gifts appeared
a bouquet cute of roses, a note, even a box of chocolates. Each one felt surreal.
The note read: *Your beauty shines brighter than the city lights. Can’t wait to see you.*
I couldn’t stop blushing
“What do you think ?” I asked Ellie that evening as they were at work .
“ Girl your secret admirer is so sweet , I just you should enjoy all this” she said, grinning. “
——
A few nights later, Ellie dragged me to a rooftop bar downtown.
“You need a break,” she’d said. “We’re dressing up, hitting the city, and finding you some fun.”
Now here I was, enjoying a cocktail and skyline view. The air was cool today , the music loud, and for the first time in ages, I felt alive.
I looked across the room, my eyes landed on a tall man at the bar.
He had this easy confidence about him, like he belonged. His smile was warm, and for a split second, He had he’s eyes on me.
“Sylvia ,” I whispered, nudging her. “That guy over there is staring at you ?”
She followed my gaze and grinned. “Well, what are you waiting for? Go say hi!”
“I can’t just—”
“Yes, you can. Go.”
I walked across the bar.
“Hi, I’m Sylvia,” I said, softly
He stood up , shook gave a cute smile. “Sylvia. Nice to meet you. I’m Alex.”
We talked for a long time. He was funny, charming, and genuinely curious about me.
“Do you tell every lady u meet they are “radiant”?” I teased after he called me ‘radiant.”
“Only when it’s true,” he said, his tone so sincere it made me blush.
As the night went on, I couldn’t shake the feeling: could Alex be my secret admirer?
“So,” I asked, testing the waters, “do you believe in love at first sight?”
He chuckled. “Only if it comes with a good story. What’s yours?”
I laughed, feeling lighter than I had in months. “Let’s just say I’m still figuring that out.”
